Setsubun at Sensoji Temple

Setsubun-e at Sensoji is held on Setsubun, the day before the start of spring (February 3 in 2027). Temple priests and selected toshi-otoko march from Denboin to the Main Hall and throw beans from a stage on its east side, followed by the Fukuju-no-mai, the Seven Lucky Gods dance. Because no demons are said to stand before Kannon, the call is 'Senshu banzai, fuku wa uchi' rather than 'oni wa soto'. Celebrities with ties to Asakusa also throw beans at an event organised by the Asakusa Tourism Federation.
Setsubun at Yoshida Shrine (Kyoto)

Setsubun-sai at Yoshida Shrine is held over three days centred on Setsubun (February 2 to 4 in 2027) and has been performed since the Muromachi period. The shrine says about 500,000 people visit in a typical year, and about 800 stalls line the approach on the 2nd and 3rd. The Tsuina-shiki demon-chasing rite, known as oni-yarai, is held on the afternoon before Setsubun, and the Karo-sai fire rite on the afternoon of Setsubun day.
Bunkyo Ume Matsuri (Plum Festival) at Yushima Tenmangu

The Bunkyo Ume Matsuri takes place at Yushima Tenmangu (Yushima Tenjin) shrine in Bunkyo City and centers on about 300 plum trees, most of them white. Bunkyo City says it is held every year from early February to early March, and the 2025 and 2026 editions both ended on March 8. The program has included taiko drumming, outdoor tea ceremonies, a mikoshi procession and regional product fairs.
Nankinmachi Spring Festival (Kobe Chinatown)

Kobe's Nankinmachi Chinatown holds its 2027 Spring Festival on February 7, marked by the organiser as the old-calendar Lunar New Year's Day, and again from February 11 to 14, for five days in total. The organiser says the programme differs by day and will be announced as it is confirmed. At the 2026 festival, lion dancers visited shops in the town, a dragon parade took place and the stage programme included face-changing and acrobatics.
Setsubun Mantoro at Kasuga Taisha

Kasuga Taisha in Nara lights the lanterns of its grounds with purified flame as Setsubun Mantoro. The shrine says about 3,000 lanterns stand in the grounds, roughly 2,000 of stone and 1,000 hanging. Its annual calendar lists the lighting at 18:00 on Setsubun day, and for 2027 the shrine advertises a paid guided evening tour on February 3 that starts at 19:30.
Hari-kuyo Needle Memorial Service at Sensoji

Hari-kuyo is a memorial service for broken and rusted needles, held at Sensoji in Asakusa on February 8. The temple says women who regularly do needlework are the main participants, and they stick needles into tofu in the hall and pray. An event listing places the service at Awashimado within the temple grounds, with a start from 11:00.
Baikasai Plum Blossom Festival at Kitano Tenmangu

Baikasai is held at Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto on February 25, the day of the annual memorial for Sugawara no Michizane, and the shrine says it has about 900 years of history. On the same day, geiko and maiko of Kamishichiken serve tea at an open-air tea gathering in the Funade Garden, a custom that began in 1952 in reference to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Kitano tea gathering. The shrine's plum garden holds about 1,500 trees of 50 varieties.
Setsubun-sai at Sumiyoshi Taisha

Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka holds its Setsubun festival on Setsubun, the day before the start of spring, to pray for the removal of misfortune and the arrival of good fortune. At the Kamiyakata hall, members of the Ogasawara school of archery, mounted archery and etiquette perform the Tsuina Hosha-shiki, in which an archer shoots at a large target shaped like a demon. The shrine says the rite is held solemnly before many spectators.
Plum Grove at Osaka Castle Park
Early February to mid-March (2027 bloom dates not announced)
Osaka, Osaka
The plum grove on the east side of the inner moat at Osaka Castle Park covers about 1.7 ha and holds about 1,245 plum trees of 105 varieties, according to the park. OSAKA-INFO lists the plum viewing season as early February to mid-March. The same tourism site lists the park as free to enter.
Setsubun Tsuina Ceremony at Zojoji

Zojoji Temple in Minato Ward holds a Setsubun bean-throwing ceremony on February 3 to drive away misfortune and invite good luck. At the 2026 edition, people born in the current zodiac year led a procession in front of the Sangedatsumon Gate, an Important Cultural Property, mochi was pounded on a stage, and preschool children performed an Oni-Mondo ceremony. The main bean-tossing is done by celebrities, including sumo wrestlers, stable masters, athletes and entertainers.
Setsubun-e at Mibudera
Early February, around Setsubun (2027 dates not yet announced)

Mibudera in Kyoto holds a three-day Setsubun-e, which the temple describes as an event with about 900 years of history. The Mibu Kyogen piece titled Setsubun is performed free of charge in the Kyogen-do hall four times a day, starting on the hour from 17:00. Visitors can also offer a horaku, an unglazed clay plate, a practice the temple says is found only at Mibudera.
Hatsuuma Festival at Fushimi Inari Taisha
February, first Day of the Horse (2027 date not yet announced)

Fushimi Inari Taisha holds its Hatsuuma festival on the first Day of the Horse in February, starting at 8:00, to commemorate the day the Inari deity first settled on Mount Inari. The shrine says it is regarded as the foremost festival of early spring in Kyoto, and worshippers fill the front of the shrine from the preceding Day of the Snake. Two days earlier, decorations called Aoyama kazari, made of cedar and chinquapin branches from Mount Inari, are placed on the main hall and the auxiliary shrines.
Grand Setsubun Festival at Kushida Shrine

Kushida Shrine in Hakata, Fukuoka, holds its Grand Setsubun Festival on Setsubun day in February. Before Setsubun, giant Otafuku masks, each standing about 5 meters tall, are installed at the main two-storied gate, the north gate and the south gate, and visitors walk through their open mouths, which is believed to bring business prosperity and household safety. On Setsubun day, famous personalities take part in a bean-throwing ritual on a special stage.
Plum Blossoms and Baikasai at Dazaifu Tenmangu

Dazaifu Tenmangu, in Dazaifu about 35 minutes by Nishitetsu train from Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, holds its Baikasai plum blossom festival on February 25, the anniversary of Sugawara no Michizane's death, and the priests wear plum blossoms in their caps. The shrine grounds have 6,000 plum trees of about 200 varieties. The sacred Tobiume stands to the right of the main sanctuary and, the shrine says, blooms first each spring, with the other plum trees following in turn.
Setsubun Festival at Utasu Shrine

Kanazawa, Ishikawa
Utasu Shrine, near the Higashi Chaya District in Kanazawa, holds a Setsubun festival with free sake, dances and bean-throwing ceremonies performed by geisha. Visit Kanazawa lists it for February 3 from noon to about 15:00, and the listing says it is free. The listing does not state a year, so the 2027 schedule is not confirmed.
Tenchosai with Bugaku at Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima holds the Tenchosai, a festival marking the Emperor's birthday, on February 23. The Miyajima Tourist Association's 2026 calendar lists the ceremony from 9:00, followed by five bugaku dances, with a 300 yen fee to enter the sanctuary. The 2027 programme has not been published.
Setsubun-e and Bean-Throwing at Daishoin, Miyajima

Daishoin Temple on Miyajima holds a Setsubun ceremony with bean-throwing. The Miyajima Tourist Association's 2026 calendar lists it on February 3 at 11:00: after a Daihannya tendoku ritual for warding off misfortune, lucky beans and lucky rice cakes are thrown. The 2027 schedule has not been published.
Setsubun Festival at Hakone Shrine

Hakone Shrine holds its Setsubun Festival on Setsubun, the day before Risshun, with a ceremony at the main hall, a Tsuina-shiki ritual at the Kagura-den and a lake event called Kojo Oni-oi on Lake Ashi. The shrine's 2026 guide lists the festival starting at 11:00, with Tsuina-shiki and bean-throwing from 11:30, and winter fireworks over Motohakone Bay from 19:30 to 19:45 on the eve. The 2027 guide has not yet been published.
Setsubun Tsuina-e at Hasedera, Kamakura

Hasedera in Kamakura holds a Setsubun bean-throwing ceremony on the day before the start of spring to ward off misfortune. The temple says celebrities and people born in the current zodiac year take part each year, and entry may be restricted when it is crowded. The Kamakura tourist association's 2026 listing gives an 11:00 Tsuina-e prayer service at the Kannon Hall and bean-throwing from 11:30 around the Kannon Hall grounds.
Setsubun Festival at Kamakura-gu

Kamakura-gu lists a Setsubun festival in its February calendar. The Kamakura tourist association's 2026 listing gives a Setsubun ritual and an Oni-yarai ritual at 15:00, with bean-throwing from 15:30 to 15:40. Worshippers receive a blessing gift and fortune beans, and the year-of-the-zodiac men and women typically throw the beans in formal court or samurai-style attire.
Kobe Port Weekend Fireworks
November 7 and 21, December 5, 2026; February 13 and 20, March 6 and 20, 2027

Kobe Port Weekend Fireworks is a short display of about 5 minutes launched from the sea off Meriken Park and Harborland, organized by the Kobe Minato no Yoru executive committee. The Feel Kobe event listing gives November 7 and 21 and December 5, 2026, and February 13 and 20 and March 6 and 20, 2027, all Saturdays. Start times vary by season, viewing is free, and a display can be cancelled at short notice because of weather or wind.
Sapporo Snow Festival
February 4-11, 2027 (Odori, Susukino and Tsudome venues)

Sapporo's winter festival of snow and ice sculptures. According to the official site, all three venues (Odori Park, Susukino and Tsudome) run from February 4 to 11, 2027. Hours and the programme will be announced later.
Nabana no Sato Illumination
October 17, 2026 – May 31, 2027 (closed January 6-7, 2027)
Kuwana, Mie
Winter illumination at Nabana no Sato, a flower park in Kuwana, Mie. The 2026-27 season runs from October 17, 2026 to May 31, 2027, and the park is closed on January 6 and 7, 2027. Gate prices are ¥2,700 or ¥3,200 depending on the period and include a ¥1,000 voucher; children below elementary school age enter free. December 23 to 25 are special days that need a date-specified ticket.
Ashikaga Flower Park Illumination
October 17, 2026 – February 14, 2027 (closed December 31)
Ashikaga, Tochigi
Ashikaga Flower Park's winter illumination, Flower Fantasy 2026-27, is its 25th season and runs from October 17, 2026 to February 14, 2027. The park's press release describes more than 5 million lights. The night session is open from 15:30 to 20:30 (21:00 on weekends and holidays), with longer hours from November 7 to January 3. The only closed day is December 31, 2026.
Otaru Snow Light Path Festival
February 6, 2027 (opening day; end date not yet announced)
Otaru, Hokkaido
Candles and snow lanterns light Otaru's canal and the former Temiya railway line in the evenings. The Otaru Tourism Association lists the 2027 Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi (Snow Light Path) from February 6; the end date and hours are not yet announced. The 2025 edition ran from February 8 to 15, 17:00 to 21:00, at the Canal, Temiya Line and other venues.
Kobe Luminarie
January 29 – February 7, 2027 (dusk to 21:30)
Kobe, Hyogo
Kobe Luminarie began as a requiem for the many lives lost in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The 32nd edition runs from January 29 to February 7, 2027, lit from dusk to 21:30, at Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi and the former Foreign Settlement. The main works at Meriken Park are in a paid area that needs a date-and-time ticket.
Marunouchi Illumination (Tokyo)
November 12, 2026 – February 14, 2027 (16:00–23:00; until 24:00 in December)
Tokyo, Tokyo
Marunouchi Illumination 2026 lights up the street trees of the Marunouchi district next to Tokyo Station from November 12, 2026 to February 14, 2027. Lights are on from 16:00 to 23:00, and until 24:00 throughout December. Viewing is free.
TOKYO SNOW DOME CITY (Tokyo Dome City Winter Illumination)
November 19, 2026 – February 28, 2027 (lit nightly)
Tokyo, Tokyo
TOKYO SNOW DOME CITY is the winter illumination at Tokyo Dome City, running from November 19, 2026 to February 28, 2027. Lights are on from 17:00 to 24:00 with free admission, and the organisers say more than one million bulbs are used. This season features Sanrio's Cinnamoroll, a roughly 15 m LED tree called WONDER SNOW TREE and a 3.9 m illuminated dome called LUMINOUS SNOW DOME.
Umekita Winter Illumination (Grand Front Osaka)
November 4, 2026 – February 28, 2027 (lit nightly)
Osaka, Osaka
The Umekita winter illumination links Grand Front Osaka and Grand Green Osaka in the Umekita area and runs from November 4, 2026 to February 28, 2027. Grand Front Osaka says more than 500,000 bulbs are used, the most so far. A press release lists champagne-gold LEDs lit daily from 17:00 to 24:00.
Jozankei New Yukitoro 2027
January 20 – February 28, 2027 (18:00–21:30)
Sapporo, Hokkaido
New Yukitoro 2027 is a free winter lighting event in Jozankei Onsen, in Sapporo's Minami Ward, held from January 20 to February 28, 2027. Lights are on from 18:00 to 21:30 with last entry at 21:15, and the evening visit to Jozankei Shrine is limited to overnight guests with an invitation ticket. The handmade snow candles of the previous format ended in February 2026 after 15 years and are replaced by a new production.
Sapporo White Illumination
November 20, 2026 – March 14, 2027 (venues differ: Odori until December 25, Ekimae-dori until February 11)
Sapporo, Hokkaido
Sapporo White Illumination is a free winter lighting event at several venues in central Sapporo, now in its 46th year. All main venues open on November 20, 2026: Odori Park runs until December 25, Ekimae-dori until February 11, 2027, and Minami 1-jo-dori, Akapura and the Sapporo Station south plaza until March 14, 2027. A new Nakajima Park venue is planned for early to late January 2027.
Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival
January 29 – February 28, 2027 (mini kamakura lit Fri–Sun 17:30–21:00)
Nikko, Tochigi
The Nikko City Tourism Association lists the Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival for January 29 to February 28, 2027. Snow huts called kamakura are lit up at night, with free mini kamakura at the Sawaguchi riverbed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and a paid venue at Heike no Sato. The association's page notes that some details other than the dates are carried over from the previous year.
Yokohama Chinatown Spring Festival Illumination 2027
November 1, 2026 – February 20, 2027 (lit 16:00–23:00)
Yokohama, Kanagawa
Yokohama Chinatown lights lantern lines along its streets for the 2027 Spring Festival, from November 1, 2026 to February 20, 2027, between 16:00 and 23:00. The display runs from the Chaoyang Gate to the central exit of Yamashita Park and across the Ichiba-dori bridge. A large dragon lantern stands on Chukagai Odori Avenue and smaller dragons are placed on Shanghai Road.
Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Winter Illuminations
February 6-10, 13, 20 and 27, 2027
Kanazawa, Ishikawa
The Four Seasons of Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden: Winter Illuminations light Kenrokuen Garden in the evening on February 6 to 10, 13, 20 and 27, 2027, according to Visit Kanazawa. The listing gives hours of 18:00 to 20:45, with closing at 21:00, and free admission. Visit Kanazawa describes the light-up as an enchanting snowy kingdom, but it does not publish a programme or a count of lights.
Sakae Minami / Osu Winter Illumination
November 13, 2026 – February 21, 2027 (lit 17:00 to midnight)
Nagoya, Aichi
The Sakae Minami / Osu Winter Illumination lights the shopping streets of Naka Ward from November 13, 2026 to February 21, 2027, from 17:00 to midnight. About 300,000 LEDs, all in a single champagne gold hue, decorate Otsu-dori South between the Sakae and Kamimaezu intersections and Minami Ise-machi-dori. The Nagoya tourism site gives the Minami-Otsu Shopping Street Promotion Association as the contact.
Hoshigaoka Terrace Winter Illumination
November 14, 2026 – February 28, 2027 (closed January 1)
Nagoya, Aichi
Hoshigaoka Terrace in eastern Nagoya runs its Winter Illumination from November 14, 2026 to February 28, 2027, with lighting from sunset to 22:30 as scheduled and a regular holiday on January 1, 2027. The theme is Botanical Town: Windy Hill, which depicts a hill where birds and insects help plants grow by riding the wind. The miniature houses and stars on the grand staircase were made by students of Sugiyama Jogakuen University.
