Jidai Matsuri

One of Kyoto's three great festivals. A 2km procession of ~2,000 costumed participants recreates 1,200 years of Japanese history, moving from Kyoto Imperial Palace to Heian Shrine.

Kurama Fire Festival

October 22 (evening)

Kyoto (Kurama), Kyoto

One of Kyoto's most dramatic festivals. Villagers carry massive torches — some 5m tall — through the mountain village of Kurama, north of Kyoto. Same night as Jidai Matsuri.

Nagasaki Kunchi

October 7–9

Nagasaki, Nagasaki

A 400-year-old festival at Suwa Shrine mixing Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch influences from Nagasaki's trading past. Dragon dances, decorated floats, and neighborhood performances that rotate every 7 years.

Zuiki Matsuri (Kitano Tenmangu)

October 1-5

Kyoto, Kyoto

Autumn harvest festival at Kitano Tenmangu where the mikoshi shrine is decorated entirely with seasonal vegetables including the namesake 'zuiki' (taro stems). A rare vegetable-themed festival with 1,000-year roots.

Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri

September 14-15 (main), plus early October

Kishiwada, Osaka, Osaka

One of Japan's most dangerous festivals — 4-ton wooden 'danjiri' floats are pulled through Kishiwada streets at full speed while acrobats stand on top. Serious accidents happen most years. Utterly thrilling to watch.

Nagoya Matsuri

Mid-October (Saturday-Sunday of the second or third weekend)

Nagoya, Aichi

The city's flagship festival featuring a grand procession portraying the three Owari-Aichi warriors — Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu — with 700+ costumed performers marching through central Nagoya.

Takaishi Super Hanabi

Sakai / Takaishi, Osaka

Western Japan's largest-scale fireworks show — 25,000 shells launched in just 46 minutes over Hamadera Park on the Osaka coast. Successor to the Takaishi Seaside Festival (since 2013), aiming to reach ~45,000 shells within 6 years.

Nikko National Park

Nikko, Tochigi

One of Japan's most spectacular autumn spots. Brilliant reds and golds surround ornate UNESCO shrines and temples. The cedar-lined avenues turn golden in October.

Daisetsuzan National Park

Kamikawa, Hokkaido

Japan's earliest autumn color — peak foliage arrives in late September. Japan's largest national park with stunning mountain panoramas in red, orange, and yellow.

Lake Towada

October 20 – November 5

Towada, Aomori

A volcanic caldera lake surrounded by forests that turn vivid red and orange. The reflected colors on the still water create mirror-like reflections.

Nabana no Sato Illumination

Late October – May

Kuwana, Mie

Japan's most spectacular winter illumination. Millions of LED lights create dazzling tunnels and landscape scenes across this botanical garden. The 'tunnel of light' is unmissable.
