Kamakura Matsuri (Kamakura Festival)

Kamakura, Kanagawa

Kamakura Matsuri is a week-long spring festival centred on Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, with events at other locations around the town. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, it opens with Shizuka no Mai, a dance based on Lady Shizuka, and closes with a yabusame horseback archery tournament.

Yayoi Matsuri (Futarasan Shrine, Nikko)

April 13-17

Nikko, Tochigi

The Yayoi Matsuri at Futarasan Shrine in Nikko welcomes spring and prays for good fortune, and is held every year from April 13 to 17. The main event on the final day features ornate floats pulled through the town, accompanied by festival music.

Shoryo-e Bugaku Ceremony (Shitennoji Temple)

Osaka, Osaka

Shoryo-e is held at Shitennoji every year on April 22, the anniversary of Prince Shotoku's death. The temple describes it as a ceremony with about 1,400 years of history that combines Buddhist chanting by the temple clergy with bugaku court dance and music performed by the Tennoji Gakusho. The bugaku is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 (International Horticultural Expo, Yokohama)

GREEN×EXPO 2027 is an international horticultural expo held at the former Kamiseya Communication Facility in Yokohama from March 19 to September 26, 2027. The organisers describe it as an A1 class expo with the theme Scenery of the Future for Happiness, and say the opening will feature around 600 cherry trees of approximately 40 varieties. Entry requires a date and time reservation made through the official ticket site.

Hana Matsuri, Buddha's Birthday Flower Festival (Sensoji)

April 8

Tokyo, Tokyo

Hana Matsuri at Sensoji marks Bussho-e, the Buddha's birthday, on April 8. According to the temple, flower shrines holding a statue of the newborn Buddha are placed inside and in front of the Main Hall and in front of the Five-Story Pagoda, and visitors pour sweet tea over the statue. The Tokyo tourism site also notes a painting of the Buddha's birth displayed in the main hall and Buddhist memorial ceremonies.

Oka-sai Cherry Blossom Festival (Hirano Shrine)

April 10

Kyoto, Kyoto

Oka-sai is held every year on April 10 at Hirano Shrine in Kita-ku, Kyoto. The shrine's schedule lists the rite at 10:00, a visit to the Emperor Kazan Mausoleum at 11:00 and the procession departure rite at 12:00, with a return rite at about 15:00. A historical procession of about 200 people moves through the shrine's parish area.

Bussho-e, Buddha's Birthday Flower Festival (Todaiji Temple)

Bussho-e, also called the Flower Festival, celebrates the Buddha's birthday at Todaiji on April 8. According to the temple's annual events page, a service is held in the Daibutsuden from about 8:00 to 9:00, after which visitors can pour sweet tea over the infant Buddha statue in a flower shrine set up in front of the Great Buddha Hall. The temple lists the sweet tea pouring as running until 17:00.

Toka-sai Peach Blossom Festival (Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima)

April 15-18

Hiroshima, Hiroshima

Toka-sai is the Peach Blossom Festival of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture. The shrine's 2026 annual events schedule lists a ceremony at 5:00 PM on April 15, followed by bugaku court dance, and sacred Noh (Shinno) performances from April 16 to 18 starting at 9:00 AM. The Okina piece is performed on the first and second days of the Noh.

Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival

Late March to early April (2026 edition: March 25 to April 8; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Fukuoka, Fukuoka

The Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival is held at Maizuru Park, on the grounds of the Fukuoka Castle ruins in Chuo-ku. Its main draw is an evening cherry blossom illumination, with food stalls, a tea house and an ohanami plaza for picnics. The festival site does not list 2027 dates yet.

Bunkyo Azalea Festival (Nezu Shrine)

April (2026 edition: April 1 to 30; 2027 dates not yet announced)

The Bunkyo Azalea Festival is held at Nezu Shrine in Bunkyo Ward, where the azalea garden has about 100 varieties and 3,000 plants, including rare types. Bunkyo Ward lists the Bunkyo Azalea Festival Executive Committee, the Bunkyo Ward Tourism Association and Nezu Shrine as organisers. In 2026 the garden was open from 9:00 to 17:30 for a donation of 500 to 1,000 yen depending on the date.

Chiyoda Sakura Festival (Chidorigafuchi)

Late March to April, following the cherry blossoms (2026: March 5 to April 22, illumination March 26 to April 6; 2027 dates not yet announced)

The Chiyoda Sakura Festival is a collective name for spring events across Chiyoda Ward, centred on the Chidorigafuchi walkway, which the official page describes as about 700 metres long. It is organised by Chiyoda City and the Chiyoda City Tourism Association. In 2026 it ran from March 5 to April 22, with the night illumination from March 26 to April 6.

Kiyomizu-dera Spring Night Special Viewing

Late March to early April (2026 edition: March 27 to April 5; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Kyoto, Kyoto

Kiyomizu-dera holds a spring night special viewing (haru no yakan tokubetsu haikan) during the cherry blossom season. In 2026 it ran from March 27 to April 5, with the gate closing at 21:30 and last entry at 21:00. The temple's event page gives the cherry blossom peak as the second half of March to early April, varying by year.

Sakura no Toorinuke, Cherry Blossom Walk (Osaka Mint Bureau)

One week in April (2026: April 9 to 15; 2025: April 5 to 11; 2027 dates not yet announced)

The Osaka Mint Bureau opens its grounds for one week each April for the Sakura no Toorinuke, a walk of about 560 metres along the old Yodogawa river side of the site. The Mint says the main varieties are mostly late-blooming double-flowered cherry trees, including Kanzan, Shogetsu, Fugenzo and Yokihi. Recent editions have required advance reservation, with entry limited to the booked time slot.

Jozankei Onsen Carp Streamer Festival (Keiryu Koinobori)

Mid-April into May (2026: April 10 to May 10; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Sapporo, Hokkaido

About 400 carp streamers (koinobori) donated by households and workplaces across Hokkaido are displayed around Jozankei Onsen in Sapporo's Minami Ward. The event is organised by the Jozankei Tourist Association, which marks 2026 as its 40th year, and viewing is free. Display sites include Jozankei Gensen Park, Futami Park and Jozankei Shrine.

Hiraoka Plum Festival (Hiraoka Park)

Late April into May (2026: April 25 to May 10; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Sapporo, Hokkaido

The Hiraoka Plum Festival is held at Hiraoka Park in Kiyota Ward, Sapporo, where about 1,200 plum trees grow on a 6.5-hectare site. The Sapporo Tourism Association's 2026 notice lists a temporary shop selling plum soft-serve ice cream and guided plum grove tours on April 28 and April 30, with registration required. The park says plums in Sapporo usually flower in early May, around the same time as the cherry blossoms.

Nagoya Castle Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri)

Late March to early April (planned for 2027; 2026 edition: March 20 to April 5)

Nagoya, Aichi

Nagoya Castle's official annual schedule lists a Cherry Blossom Festival for late March to early April 2027, within a Spring Festival planned from late March to early May 2027, and notes that plans may change or be cancelled. In 2026 the festival ran from March 20 to April 5 with hours extended to 9:00 to 19:30 and the cherry blossoms lit after sunset. The castle site gives about 900 cherry trees of about 10 varieties, mainly Someiyoshino and weeping cherry.

Kenrokuen Free Cherry Blossom Viewing and Light-up (Kanazawa Castle Park)

Early April, around peak bloom (2026: April 2 to 8; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Kanazawa, Ishikawa

Kenrokuen Garden is open free of charge and illuminated for a limited time during the cherry blossom season. In 2026 the free period ran from April 2 to 8, from 7:00 to 21:30, with the lights coming on at sunset. The Kanazawa Castle Park page of Ishikawa Prefecture also lists extended evening hours from sunset to 21:00, with free admission, in tourist season including cherry blossom season.

Peony and Shakuyaku Flower Festival (Hakozaki Shrine)

April (2026 edition: April 1 to 30; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Fukuoka, Fukuoka

Hakozaki Shrine's Shinen Flower Garden holds a Peony and Shakuyaku Flower Festival, listed as open April 1 to 30 in 2026 with no closures during the period. The shrine gives about 100 varieties and 2,000 peony plants blooming from early to mid-April, and about 30 varieties and 500 shakuyaku plants from mid to late April. Garden hours are 9:30 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30.

Miyako Odori (Gion Kobu)

Miyako Odori is a spring dance performance by the geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu, Kyoto's largest maiko and geiko district, staged at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater. Kyoto's tourism site says it has been part of the city's spring traditions since 1872, and the Japan National Tourism Organization says the theater was built for the First Kyoto Exposition that year. In 2026 it ran from April 1 to 30, with admission listed at 4,000 to 7,000 yen.

Kameido Tenjin Wisteria Festival

April (2026 edition: April 4 to 30; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Tokyo, Tokyo

The Wisteria Festival at Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Koto City, Tokyo, was listed for April 4 to 30 in 2026. The Tokyo tourism site describes lavender-colored wisteria hanging from trellises above a pond, with the purple flowers reflected on the water. It says the vines were planted in the Edo period and that the fifth and eighth Tokugawa shoguns, Tsunayoshi and Yoshimune, reportedly visited to see them.

Sankeien Garden Cherry Blossom Light-up

Late March to early April (2026: March 27 to April 5; 2027 dates not yet announced)

Yokohama, Kanagawa

Sankeien Garden in Yokohama lists a cherry blossom light-up (sakura raitoappu) in its annual event schedule. In 2026 it ran from March 27 to April 5, with the garden closing at 21:00 and last entry at 20:30. The garden notes that the dates may change depending on the bloom status.

Ueno Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival)

Mid-March to early April (2027 dates not yet announced)

Tokyo, Tokyo

Ueno Sakura Matsuri is the cherry blossom festival of Ueno Park in Tokyo, organized by the Ueno Tourism Federation. Tokyo's official tourism site notes 800 Somei-yoshino cherry trees along the main path, which is lit by 800 hanging lanterns during the festival. The 2026 edition ran from mid-March to early April; the dates follow the cherry blossom season and 2027 dates have not been announced.

Osaka Castle Nighttime Cherry Blossom Viewing at Nishinomaru Garden

Osaka, Osaka

The nighttime cherry blossom viewing is one of the events of the Osaka Castle Spring Festival and takes place in Nishinomaru Garden, inside Osaka Castle Park. The park's official page lists about 300 illuminated Yoshino and weeping cherry trees in the garden for 2026, when the viewing ran from March 20 to April 12. The 2027 dates have not been announced.

Nijo-jo Castle Sakura Festival and Night Illumination

Kyoto, Kyoto

Kyoto City holds the Nijo-jo Castle Sakura Festival each spring, with a night program of cherry blossom illumination and projection mapping. The 2025 festival ran from mid-March to mid-April, and the 2026 night event, SAKURA NIGHTS, ran from March 19 to April 19. The castle's website refers to a 2027 night program, but the 2027 dates have not been announced.

Tsuruma Park Cherry Blossom Festival

Third week of March to mid-April (2027 dates not yet announced)

Nagoya, Aichi

Tsuruma Park in Nagoya's Showa Ward holds a cherry blossom festival around about 750 Somei Yoshino trees, with evening illumination, food trucks and a beer garden. The Aichi tourism site lists the 2026 festival from March 20 to April 12, with free park admission and illumination from 18:00 to 22:00. The festival's contact is the Nagoya City Greenery Center, and the 2027 dates have not been announced.

FUKUOKA Higashi Ward Fireworks Festival (32nd)

April 17

Fukuoka, Fukuoka

The 32nd FUKUOKA Higashi Ward Fireworks Festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2027, at Mishima Green Bay Walk on the Kashiihama Katao-Sa Coast in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City. The organiser, the Fukuoka Higashiku Fireworks Festival Executive Committee, lists about 7,000 shells and a launch start at 19:30. The event is held in rain and cancelled in severe weather, with no postponement.

Nabana no Sato Illumination

October 17, 2026 – May 31, 2027 (closed January 6-7, 2027)

Kuwana, Mie

Winter illumination at Nabana no Sato, a flower park in Kuwana, Mie. The 2026-27 season runs from October 17, 2026 to May 31, 2027, and the park is closed on January 6 and 7, 2027. Gate prices are ¥2,700 or ¥3,200 depending on the period and include a ¥1,000 voucher; children below elementary school age enter free. December 23 to 25 are special days that need a date-specified ticket.
