Chichibu Night Festival

The night festival of Chichibu Shrine. After the Osuwa-watari rite on the night of December 2, six kasaboko and yatai floats lead the procession on the night of December 3, and the festival is known for its large winter fireworks. It is registered by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Hagoita-ichi Battledore Market (Sensoji)

December 17-19, 2026

Hagoita-ichi is held at Sensoji every December 17 to 19, when dozens of stalls selling decorated hagoita battledores line the temple grounds. It grew out of Edo's year-end market (toshi-no-ichi) around the 18th, the last Kannon fair day of the year, and hagoita became its main item in the late Edo period.

Shimai-Tenjin at Kitano Tenmangu

Shimai-Tenjin is the last Tenjin-ichi market of the year at Kitano Tenmangu, held on December 25. The shrine holds a Tenjin market on the 25th of every month, and on this day there are more stalls than usual and many worshippers come to close the year.

Shimai-Kobo at Toji Temple

Toji holds its Kobo-ichi market on the 21st of every month, when nearly 1,000 stalls fill the temple grounds, and the December 21 market is the last of the year, known as Shimai-Kobo. The market grew over more than 700 years around the monthly Mieku service for Kobo Daishi, which began in 910.

Joya-sai and Okera Fire at Yasaka Shrine

On New Year's Eve Yasaka Shrine holds Joya-sai at 19:00. After the ceremony, the sacred okera fire is moved into the okera lanterns at three places in the shrine grounds. Okera-sai, a prayer to ward off illness and misfortune, follows at 5:00 on January 1.

Kobe Port Weekend Fireworks

November 7 and 21, December 5, 2026; February 13 and 20, March 6 and 20, 2027

Kobe, Hyogo

Kobe Port Weekend Fireworks is a short display of about 5 minutes launched from the sea off Meriken Park and Harborland, organized by the Kobe Minato no Yoru executive committee. The Feel Kobe event listing gives November 7 and 21 and December 5, 2026, and February 13 and 20 and March 6 and 20, 2027, all Saturdays. Start times vary by season, viewing is free, and a display can be cancelled at short notice because of weather or wind.

Kyoto's scenic western district blazes with autumn color. The hillsides along the Hozu River turn deep red and orange, complementing the bamboo groves and temples.

Nabana no Sato Illumination

October 17, 2026 – May 31, 2027 (closed January 6-7, 2027)

Kuwana, Mie

Winter illumination at Nabana no Sato, a flower park in Kuwana, Mie. The 2026-27 season runs from October 17, 2026 to May 31, 2027, and the park is closed on January 6 and 7, 2027. Gate prices are ¥2,700 or ¥3,200 depending on the period and include a ¥1,000 voucher; children below elementary school age enter free. December 23 to 25 are special days that need a date-specified ticket.

Ashikaga Flower Park Illumination

October 17, 2026 – February 14, 2027 (closed December 31)

Ashikaga, Tochigi

Ashikaga Flower Park's winter illumination, Flower Fantasy 2026-27, is its 25th season and runs from October 17, 2026 to February 14, 2027. The park's press release describes more than 5 million lights. The night session is open from 15:30 to 20:30 (21:00 on weekends and holidays), with longer hours from November 7 to January 3. The only closed day is December 31, 2026.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Christmas Market

November 20 – December 25, 2026

Yokohama, Kanagawa

Christmas Market in Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse runs from November 20 to December 25, 2026. It opens 11:00 to 21:00 until December 4 and 11:00 to 22:00 from December 5; the opening day, November 20, is 17:00 to 21:00. Entry tickets start at ¥500 (¥1,000 on special days), and some areas such as Christmas Village in Akarenga Park are free.

Marunouchi Illumination (Tokyo)

November 12, 2026 – February 14, 2027 (16:00–23:00; until 24:00 in December)

Marunouchi Illumination 2026 lights up the street trees of the Marunouchi district next to Tokyo Station from November 12, 2026 to February 14, 2027. Lights are on from 16:00 to 23:00, and until 24:00 throughout December. Viewing is free.

Hiroshima Dreamination

December 4, 2026 – January 24, 2027 (17:30–22:30)

Hiroshima Dreamination is a free winter lighting event in central Hiroshima, including Peace Boulevard. In this season it runs from December 4, 2026 to January 24, 2027, after the organisers moved it from its earlier November 17 to January 3 period. Lights are on from 17:30 to 22:30, and the opening day starts at 18:00.

TOKYO SNOW DOME CITY (Tokyo Dome City Winter Illumination)

November 19, 2026 – February 28, 2027 (lit nightly)

Tokyo, Tokyo

TOKYO SNOW DOME CITY is the winter illumination at Tokyo Dome City, running from November 19, 2026 to February 28, 2027. Lights are on from 17:00 to 24:00 with free admission, and the organisers say more than one million bulbs are used. This season features Sanrio's Cinnamoroll, a roughly 15 m LED tree called WONDER SNOW TREE and a 3.9 m illuminated dome called LUMINOUS SNOW DOME.

Umekita Winter Illumination (Grand Front Osaka)

November 4, 2026 – February 28, 2027 (lit nightly)

Osaka, Osaka

The Umekita winter illumination links Grand Front Osaka and Grand Green Osaka in the Umekita area and runs from November 4, 2026 to February 28, 2027. Grand Front Osaka says more than 500,000 bulbs are used, the most so far. A press release lists champagne-gold LEDs lit daily from 17:00 to 24:00.

Sapporo White Illumination

November 20, 2026 – March 14, 2027 (venues differ: Odori until December 25, Ekimae-dori until February 11)

Sapporo, Hokkaido

Sapporo White Illumination is a free winter lighting event at several venues in central Sapporo, now in its 46th year. All main venues open on November 20, 2026: Odori Park runs until December 25, Ekimae-dori until February 11, 2027, and Minami 1-jo-dori, Akapura and the Sapporo Station south plaza until March 14, 2027. A new Nakajima Park venue is planned for early to late January 2027.

Yokohama Chinatown Spring Festival Illumination 2027

November 1, 2026 – February 20, 2027 (lit 16:00–23:00)

Yokohama, Kanagawa

Yokohama Chinatown lights lantern lines along its streets for the 2027 Spring Festival, from November 1, 2026 to February 20, 2027, between 16:00 and 23:00. The display runs from the Chaoyang Gate to the central exit of Yamashita Park and across the Ichiba-dori bridge. A large dragon lantern stands on Chukagai Odori Avenue and smaller dragons are placed on Shanghai Road.

Sakae Minami / Osu Winter Illumination

November 13, 2026 – February 21, 2027 (lit 17:00 to midnight)

Nagoya, Aichi

The Sakae Minami / Osu Winter Illumination lights the shopping streets of Naka Ward from November 13, 2026 to February 21, 2027, from 17:00 to midnight. About 300,000 LEDs, all in a single champagne gold hue, decorate Otsu-dori South between the Sakae and Kamimaezu intersections and Minami Ise-machi-dori. The Nagoya tourism site gives the Minami-Otsu Shopping Street Promotion Association as the contact.

Hoshigaoka Terrace Winter Illumination

November 14, 2026 – February 28, 2027 (closed January 1)

Nagoya, Aichi

Hoshigaoka Terrace in eastern Nagoya runs its Winter Illumination from November 14, 2026 to February 28, 2027, with lighting from sunset to 22:30 as scheduled and a regular holiday on January 1, 2027. The theme is Botanical Town: Windy Hill, which depicts a hill where birds and insects help plants grow by riding the wind. The miniature houses and stars on the grand staircase were made by students of Sugiyama Jogakuen University.

SENDAI Pageant of Starlight 2026

December 4-27, 2026 (lit from 18:00)

Sendai, Miyagi

The SENDAI Pageant of Starlight lights the trees of Jozenji-dori in central Sendai, between Sendai Mitsukoshi and Jozenji Garden Hills Geihinkan. The 2026 edition runs for 24 days, from December 4 to 27. Lights are on from 18:00 to 21:00 Sunday to Thursday, and from 18:00 to 22:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and December 24. The pageant was first held in 1986.

Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo 2026

November 20 – December 25, 2026 (11:00–21:00)

Sapporo, Hokkaido

Sapporo's Munich Christmas Market recreates the atmosphere of the Christmas market in Munich, Sapporo's sister city. The 25th edition runs from November 20 to December 25, 2026 in Odori Park 1-chome and 2-chome, from 11:00 to 21:00 (last order 20:45). Stalls sell hot wine, Christmas food and seasonal goods, and all venues accept cashless payment.

Midosuji Illumination 2026 (Osaka Festival of the Lights)

November 3 – December 31, 2026 (about 17:00 to 25:00)

Osaka, Osaka

Midosuji Illumination 2026 is a core programme of the Osaka Festival of the Lights 2026 (Osaka Hikari-no-Kyoen). It lights the Midosuji boulevard from the Hanshin-mae intersection in Kita Ward to the Namba-nishiguchi intersection in Chuo Ward for 59 days, from November 3 to December 31, 2026, from about 17:00 until 1:00 the next morning.

OSAKA Hikari-Renaissance 2026

December 11-25, 2026

Osaka, Osaka

OSAKA Hikari-Renaissance 2026 is a core programme of the Osaka Festival of the Lights 2026. It runs for 15 days, from December 11 to 25, 2026, in the area from around Osaka City Hall to Nakanoshima Park. According to the City of Osaka, hours vary by programme.

Christmas Advent 2026 (Fukuoka Christmas markets)

November 7 – December 26, 2026 (dates differ by venue)

Fukuoka, Fukuoka

Christmas Advent, one of Fukuoka's main winter events, holds its 14th edition in 2026 at venues from Hakata to Tenjin. The JR Hakata Station square venue runs from November 7 to December 25, and the venue at the Fureai Plaza on the west side of Fukuoka City Hall in Tenjin runs from November 14 to December 26, closed on November 28 and 29. Lighting times for each venue are posted on the official site.
