Japan's Three Great Festivals: Gion, Tenjin, Kanda
2026-10-20 ยท 2 min read

Three summer festivals, three capitals โ ancient Kyoto, merchant Osaka, and shogunate Edo. Each one draws crowds a thousand years in the making.
A matsuri is less a performance than an act of memory โ a city doing something its ancestors did, in exactly the same streets, at exactly the same hour.

Nihon Sandai Matsuri
The traditional ranking known as Nihon Sandai Matsuri โ the Three Great Festivals of Japan โ brings together Kyoto's Gion Matsuri, Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri, and TokyoPR's Kanda Matsuri. All three originated in prayers to protect their cities from epidemic, fire, or civil disaster, and all three have grown over centuries into vast civic events that still take over their host cities for days at a time.
Visitors who plan around any one of these festivals should book accommodation months in advance โ hotel inventory in the host cities tightens dramatically for the key dates, and prices commonly double or triple.
1. Gion Matsuri (Kyoto, July)
Gion Matsuri is the oldest and arguably the most famous of the three. Centered on Yasaka Shrine in KyotoPR's Gion district, it dates to 869 CE, when it was first held to appease the deities believed to be causing a plague. Today the festival stretches across the entire month of July, with the grand yamaboko floats โ massive wheeled wooden structures draped in antique tapestries โ paraded through downtown Kyoto on 17 July (Saki Matsuri) and 24 July (Ato Matsuri).
- โDates โ all of July; peak days are the Yoiyama evenings (14โ16 and 21โ23 July) and the parades on 17 and 24 July
- โBest viewing spots โ the intersections along Shijo-dori and Kawaramachi-dori for the parade; the Shinmachi and Muromachi neighborhoods for the Yoiyama float displays
- โHotel booking lead time โ 4โ6 months ahead for mid-range options near the parade route
2. Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka, 24โ25 July)
Tenjin Matsuri is a 1,000-year-old celebration of Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar-god enshrined at OsakaPR Tenmangu. The main events fall on 24 and 25 July, culminating on the evening of the 25th with the funatogyo river procession โ a flotilla of about a hundred lantern-lit boats carrying portable shrines down the Okawa River โ followed by a 3,000-shell fireworks display over the water.
- โDates โ 24 and 25 July every year
- โBest viewing spots โ the Sakuranomiya Park riverbanks for the boat procession and fireworks; near OsakaPR Tenmangu Shrine for the daytime land procession
- โHotel booking lead time โ 3โ5 months ahead for central OsakaPR hotels on 25 July
3. Kanda Matsuri (Tokyo, mid-May, odd-numbered years)
Kanda Matsuri is held in TokyoPR every two years, on the Saturday and Sunday closest to 15 May in odd-numbered years, alternating with Asakusa's Sanja Matsuri in even years. The main day features a grand procession of around 500 participants, several portable mikoshi, and ox-drawn carts winding through the Kanda, Nihonbashi, and Marunouchi districts before converging on Kanda Myojin Shrine.
- โDates โ the weekend closest to 15 May, odd-numbered years (next: May 2027)
- โBest viewing spots โ the approaches to Kanda Myojin Shrine; the Nihonbashi crossing for the daytime parade
- โHotel booking lead time โ 2โ3 months ahead for central TokyoPR; longer if combining with other May events
Planning around a festival
| Festival | City | Main dates | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gion Matsuri | Kyoto | All July (peaks 17 & 24) | Annual |
| Tenjin Matsuri | Osaka | 24โ25 July | Annual |
| Kanda Matsuri | Tokyo | ~15 May weekend | Odd-numbered years |
โกJuly heat is serious
Gion and Tenjin both fall in the peak of Japan's humid summer, with daytime temperatures often above 35ยฐC. Carry water, plan air-conditioned breaks, and consider renting a yukata locally โ the thin cotton robe is standard festival wear for a reason.
