History: why Gion Matsuri exists
In 869 AD, a deadly plague swept Kyoto (then Heian-kyo). Emperor Seiwa ordered prayer at Yasaka Shrine, and 66 hoko (long halberd spears, one for each province of Japan) were erected to placate the plague gods. When the plague ended, an annual purification ritual began โ and 1,150 years later, it's STILL happening, virtually unchanged. The yamaboko floats represent those original spears. Every year you watch, you're seeing one of the longest-running rituals in human history.

Honest opinion: Yoiyama is the BETTER experience than the parade itself. The three evenings before each parade, the streets close to cars. Each yamaboko float is lit by hundreds of lanterns. Old machiya houses open their family treasures to passersby (Byobu Matsuri). Food stalls line every street. Local families wear yukata. THIS is what 1,000 years of Kyoto tradition feels like.
- โSaki Yoiyama: July 14 (Yoi-yoi-yoiyama), July 15 (Yoi-yoiyama), July 16 (Yoiyama)
- โAto Yoiyama: July 21โ23
- โStreets closed to traffic: 6 PM onwards
- โPeak crowds: 8โ10 PM
- โPro tip: arrive at 5 PM, walk WHILE setup is happening โ most magical hour
- โBest food stalls: takoyaki, yakisoba, kakigori (shaved ice), Kyoto-style sake
