Japan's Three Great Fireworks: Omagari, Nagaoka, Tsuchiura
๐Ÿ’กTL;DRโฑ 2 min read

The three fireworks festivals Japan ranks above all others, with ticketing lead times, free-seat realities, and when to book nearby hotels.

Japan launches thousands of fireworks shows every summer, but tradition reserves the top rank for only three.

The three great fireworks festivals of Japan, nihon sandai hanabi taikai, are the ones that pyrotechnicians themselves treat as the professional calendar. Omagari in Akita and Tsuchiura in Ibaraki are head-to-head competitions among the country's top makers; Nagaoka in Niigata is a memorial event with the single largest display any traveler is likely to see. Hotel supply around all three sells out months in advance.

1. Omagari: the national competition in Akita

Held on the fourth Saturday of August along the Omonogawa river in Daisen City, Omagari is the oldest and most prestigious of the pyrotechnicians' competitions. Roughly thirty of Japan's elite firework makers compete across three divisions, with judging by other professionals. The 2026 edition is expected to launch close to twenty thousand shells across a program that runs from an afternoon daytime round into a long evening finale. Paid stadium-style sajiki seats are allocated by lottery each spring, with resale almost nonexistent.

  • โ—Date โ€” fourth Saturday of August; 2026 falls on August 22.
  • โ—Scale โ€” about 18,000 to 20,000 shells across daytime and evening programs.
  • โ—Seating โ€” paid sajiki by spring lottery; free riverbank space fills from early morning.
  • โ—Hotel booking โ€” accommodation in Daisen sells out within hours of the date being announced; many travelers base in Akita City or Morioka and ride in.

2. Nagaoka: the Phoenix shells of early August

Nagaoka's fireworks on August 2 and 3 commemorate the city's wartime air raid and postwar rebirth, and the showpiece is the Fukkou Kigan Hanabi Phoenix, a wall-length barrage set to music that stretches more than two kilometers along the Shinano river. Nagaoka also launches the giant Shosanshakudama shells, nearly a meter in diameter, which produce the single largest bursts in Japan. Both nights draw well over a million spectators combined.

  • โ—Date โ€” fixed to August 2 and 3 each year.
  • โ—Scale โ€” around 20,000 shells per night; headline Phoenix barrage runs several minutes.
  • โ—Seating โ€” paid ticketsPR sold through official lottery in spring; free standing areas open along both riverbanks.
  • โ—Hotel booking โ€” Nagaoka Station hotels sell out six to nine months ahead; Niigata City is the main overflow base, reached in under thirty minutes by Joetsu Shinkansen.

3. Tsuchiura: the autumn competition in Ibaraki

Tsuchiura closes the pyrotechnic calendar in early autumn, usually the first Saturday of October. Held along the Sakuragawa river, the format pits competitors in starmine, ten-inch shell, and creative divisions, and the cool autumn air generally produces unusually crisp bursts. Because it falls outside the summer travel peak, Tsuchiura is marginally easier to attend than Omagari, but the ticketPR lottery is still oversubscribed.

  • โ—Date โ€” first Saturday of October; 2026 falls on October 3.
  • โ—Scale โ€” around 20,000 shells, with the newest competition formats of the three.
  • โ—Seating โ€” paid sajiki by summer lottery; the free embankment zones south of the launch site give usable views.
  • โ—Hotel booking โ€” Tsuchiura inventory is small; most travelers stay in Tsukuba or central TokyoPR and ride the Joban Line.

Paid seat lotteries for all three festivals typically open four to six months in advance. Missing the window means relying on free standing areas, which fill by mid-afternoon on the day.
