Hokkaido 7-Day Itinerary 2027: First-Timer Loop (Train or Car)
2026-10-22 · 11分鐘閱讀

First time in Hokkaido? This 7-day loop covers Sapporo, Otaru, Furano and Hakodate — Japan's seafood capital, snow country and night-view city. Here's the exact plan with train and car routes.
Hokkaido is bigger than Switzerland and twice as snowy, which traps most first-time visitors into one of two mistakes: trying to see everything in 3 days, or planning so loosely they only ever leave Sapporo. Seven days is the sweet spot — enough to taste four very different corners of the island, with just one base change.

⚡Hokkaido rewards car rental more than Honshu does
Hokkaido's cities are far apart and its countryside is sparse — the exact opposite of Kyoto/TokyoPR. A rental car saves 2–4 hours per day in Furano and Hakodate region. If you have an International Driving Permit, use it; if not, the itinerary works by train with some patience.

Days 1–2: Sapporo
Chitose Airport (CTS) is Hokkaido's main entry. The JR Rapid Airport train runs every 15 minutes to SapporoPR Station (37 min, ¥1,150). Base in Odori or Susukino districts for walking access to everything. Two full days covers Nijo Market, Sapporo Beer Museum + Jingisukan, Odori Park, Susukino nightlife, and the Hokkaido Shrine. If visiting in February, this is where Sapporo Snow Festival happens.
- ●Day 1 PM: Nijo Market dinner (donburi) → Odori Park walk → Ramen Yokocho late-night.
- ●Day 2 AM: SapporoPR Beer Museum (free self-tour + ¥1,000 tasting flight).
- ●Day 2 PM: Hokkaido Shrine + Maruyama Park walk → Jingisukan dinner at Beer Garden.
- ●Day 2 evening: Susukino izakaya hopping OR SapporoPR TV Tower illumination.
Day 3: Otaru (day trip, then onward)
Otaru is a 32-minute train ride from SapporoPR and the best day-trip in Hokkaido. Pack an overnight bag and leave the bigger luggage at Sapporo Station coin lockers. After 5 hours in Otaru, catch the limited-express to Furano via Takikawa (3 hours total). If visiting February 7–15, time Day 3 so you catch Otaru's Snow Light Path lighting at 5 PM before boarding the Furano train.
- ●9 AM: JR Rapid SapporoPR → Otaru (32 min, ¥750).
- ●10 AM–3 PM: Canal, Sakaimachi shops, music-box museum, Sushi-ya Dori lunch (¥3,500 omakase).
- ●3:30 PM: Train Otaru → SapporoPR → change to Furano Line.
- ●7:00 PM: Arrive Furano, hotel check-in. Rest.
Day 4: Furano + Biei
The flexibility winner. If you have a rental car, start with Farm Tomita at 8 AM, then drive Patchwork Road, hit Shikisai-no-Oka, and finish at the Blue Pond. If you have no car, use the local Twinkle Bus loop or taxi between stops. In summer, this is the day you'll remember forever.
- ●8 AM: Farm Tomita opening — lavender fields before coach tourPRs arrive.
- ●10:30 AM: Shikisai-no-Oka Patchwork Hill (¥500) — multi-colour flower quilt.
- ●12:30 PM: Lunch at Furano Cheese Factory (¥1,500 fondue set).
- ●2 PM: Patchwork Road drive — Ken and Mary's Tree, Seven Stars Tree.
- ●4 PM: Blue Pond (Shirogane Aoiike) — turquoise mineral pond.
- ●6 PM: Dinner in Biei town or Shin-Furano Prince Hotel.

Day 5: Furano → Hakodate (travel day with sights)
The long transit day: morning in Biei, then back to SapporoPR-Hakodate by shinkansen. Hokkaido Shinkansen runs Sapporo → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in 3h 40m; add 20 min to central Hakodate on local train. Keep this day light: arrive hotel late afternoon, dinner in Hakodate, early night.
Days 6–7: Hakodate + return
Day 6 is the big day — morning market breakfast, Motomachi slopes walk, red-brick warehouses lunch, Goryokaku Fort afternoon, Mt. Hakodate night view at sunset. Day 7 is return: optional second morning-market trip, shinkansen back to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, train to Chitose, flight home. Hakodate Airport (HKD) is a lower-cost direct option if you can book a TokyoPR-Hakodate return instead of Chitose round-trip.
- ●Day 6 AM: Hakodate Morning Market donburi + live-squid attraction.
- ●Day 6 PM: Motomachi slopes (Russian Orthodox, Ward Office) + Red Brick Warehouses.
- ●Day 6 evening: Mt. Hakodate ropeway 30 min before sunset.
- ●Day 7 AM: Second market breakfast OR Goryokaku Fort visit.
- ●Day 7 PM: Hokkaido Shinkansen back to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto → onwards to CTS.

Transport: should you buy the Hokkaido Rail Pass?
The JR Hokkaido Rail Pass covers all JR trains on the island — ¥20,000 for 5 days or ¥27,000 for 7 days. Our 7-day loop uses roughly ¥22,000 of train ticketsPR in individual pricing, making the 7-day pass break-even at best. Worth it if you add side trips (Noboribetsu, Asahikawa) or want flexibility to change plans. Not worth it if you'll rent a car for the Furano day.
