Hokkaido's lavender season (early July to early August) centres on Farm Tomita in Furano and the patchwork hills of Biei. Here's exactly when to go and how to see it without a car — or with one.

Furano in July is the one week each year when central Hokkaido turns photorealistic violet. Farm Tomita's seven lavender fields overlap peak bloom with the rolling patchwork of Biei's crop quilt — and if you time it right, you catch both in a single sunrise-to-sunset day.

💡Last content review: October 2026

Bloom timing based on Farm Tomita's published 2015-2025 historical dates; access options verified via JR Hokkaido and Furano Bus 2026 summer timetables.

When does the lavender actually peak?

Farm Tomita's seven fields bloom in staggered timing so some lavender is visible from June 20 through August 10 — but peak "everything in full flower" lands between July 15 and July 25 in most years. Blooms shift ±5 days depending on the summer's warmth; the farm publishes bi-weekly updates on its official site from May onwards.

Farm Tomita vs Shikisai-no-Oka vs Shikisai Farm — what each is for

The region has three widely-photographed flower farms. They are each located differently and look different. Doing all three on one day is possible but exhausting; most visitors pick two.

  • ●Farm Tomita (Nakafurano) — The famous one. Free entry. Seven lavender fields plus poppies, salvia, baby's breath. Access by JR Furano Line to Lavender-batake Station (summer only) or Nakafurano Station. 8 AM–5 PM.
  • ●Shikisai-no-Oka (Biei) — Multi-colour "flower patchwork" quilt covering a hillside; lavender is one of 30+ species here. ¥500 entry. 8:30 AM–5 PM. Reachable by rental car or taxi from Biei Station (10 min).
  • ●Shikisai Farm Kanno (Kamifurano) — Smaller, less crowded, excellent for photos without the Tomita masses. 10 min drive from Nakafurano.
  • ●Choei Lavender Field (Nakafurano hilltop) — Free, 10-min walk from Lavender-batake Station. Panoramic hillside view. Underrated — go here when Tomita is overcrowded.
  • ●Patchwork Road (Biei) — Not a single farm but a 10 km rural route of rolling crop fields. Best by rental car for stops at "Ken and Mary's Tree", "Seven Stars Tree", etc.

Getting there: train vs rental car

Unlike most of Japan, Hokkaido rewards rental cars. The Furano-Biei region especially: fields are rural, buses are hourly, and the photo spots along Patchwork Road are inaccessible by public transit. If you have a licence, rent a car from SapporoPR or Asahikawa Airport (AKJ). If not, the Lavender Express trains and the Twinkle Bus make the main sites reachable.

The best 2-day Furano + Biei itinerary

Two days is the sweet spot: one for lavender, one for Biei's patchwork and the Blue Pond (Shirogane Aoiike). You can do it as a loop from SapporoPR (overnight in Furano or Biei) or build it into a longer Hokkaido summer trip.

  • ●Day 1 morning — Pick up rental car at SapporoPR or train to Furano. Lunch at Furano Cheese Factory (¥1,200 for cheese fondue set).
  • ●Day 1 afternoon — Farm Tomita (90 min walking the fields), then Choei lavender field for sunset shots.
  • ●Day 1 evening — Dinner and onsen at Shin-Furano Prince Hotel or a Biei B&B.
  • ●Day 2 morning — Shikisai-no-Oka at opening (8:30 AM, before coach tourPRs arrive). Then Patchwork Road loop by car.
  • ●Day 2 afternoon — Blue Pond (Shirogane Aoiike, 20 min drive from Biei) + Shirahige Falls. Return to SapporoPR by evening.

Beyond lavender: what else to do here

  • ●Blue Pond (Shirogane Aoiike) — Turquoise mineral pond, 20 min drive from Biei. Instagram icon.
  • ●Furano Cheese Factory — Free entry; cheese-making classes ¥1,500. On the drive back toward SapporoPR.
  • ●Ningle Terrace — Fairy-tale wooden cottages in a Prince Hotel forest. Charming evening walk.
  • ●Furano Winery — Local Hokkaido wine; free tastings. 10 min from Farm Tomita.
  • ●Daisetsuzan National Park — Hokkaido's largest park, 1 hr east of Biei. Day-hikes with alpine wildflowers.
Why book now

Furano and Biei have only 1,500 total hotel rooms

  • Peak lavender week (July 15–25) draws 300K+ visitors but local accommodation is small-town scale
  • Shin-Furano Prince and Furano Natulux typically sell out by April 2027 for peak dates
  • Sapporo day-trip is a workable fallback — book that hotel too if you can't find Furano

FAQ

  • ●When is lavender peak in 2027? Historical average: July 15–25. Confirm via Farm Tomita's bloom-report page from early June.
  • ●Can I do Furano as a day trip from [Sapporo](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Sapporo&aid=8095781&label=auto-sapporo-autolink)? Yes, but it's a long day (12+ hours). Overnighting is more enjoyable.
  • ●Do I need a car? Not strictly, but it unlocks Biei's Patchwork Road and Blue Pond. Trains alone will cover Farm Tomita + Shikisai-no-Oka.
  • ●Is Farm Tomita free? Yes, entirely free. Only the restaurant, café and lavender ice cream cost money.
  • ●What should I eat? Lavender soft-serve ice cream at Tomita (¥400), Furano cheese fondue, Furano melon in summer (¥2,000+ for whole melon).
  • ●Is August too late? Depends on year. Early August can still catch late-blooming fields. Mid-August onwards: sunflowers and cosmos replace lavender.
  • ●What's the weather like? 20–28°C days, 15–20°C evenings. Rain is uncommon in July but occurs. Bring a light sweater and sun hat.
  • ●Any entry fees? Farm Tomita, Choei field: free. Shikisai-no-Oka: ¥500. Blue Pond: free. Shirogane Shirahige Falls: free.
  • ●Can I visit outside lavender season? Yes — spring (May) has shibazakura, autumn (October) has yellow larch forests, winter has Furano Ski Resort.
  • ●Can wheelchairs access Farm Tomita? Mostly yes — paved main paths. Hilly side paths less so.
  • ●Best photo time? Early morning (6-8 AM, soft light, no crowds). Golden hour sunset works but Farm Tomita closes at 5 PM.
  • ●Can I buy lavender products? Yes — Farm Tomita gift shop has soaps, perfumes, pillows, ice cream base. Mid-range prices (¥800–¥3,500).
