Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 (Feb 4-11) is Japan's biggest winter event: 200+ snow sculptures across three sites, -8°C evenings, 2 million visitors. Here's exactly how to plan it.

The Sapporo Snow Festival turns Odori Park into an open-air gallery of 15-metre snow sculptures, illuminated nightly against a backdrop of -8°C air so clear your breath hangs like fog. It is the single most spectacular winter event in Japan — and the hardest week of the year to find a Sapporo hotel room.

💡Last content review: October 2026

Dates, prices and venue hours confirmed against official SapporoPR Snow Festival Executive Committee listings and JR Hokkaido timetables. 2027 edition dates confirmed by city tourism board; venue list stable since 2017.

The three venues, in order of priority

The festival spreads across three sites that each do a different job. If you have one evening, you only need Odori Park. If you have a full day, add Susukino at night and Tsudome for a morning with kids. Here is what each site is really for, in the order most visitors should tackle them.

  • ●Odori Park (main site) — 12 city blocks of massive snow sculptures, some 15m tall and 25m wide, lit from 5 PM to 10 PM. This is the one that appears in every photograph of the festival. Entry at any point along the 1.5 km strip; the TV Tower end is the busiest, so start from Nishi 8-chome and walk east.
  • ●Susukino Ice World — Compact (one city block) but 60 highly-detailed ice sculptures with fish and flowers frozen inside. Walking distance from Odori. Peak atmosphere 7 PM–10 PM alongside Susukino's izakaya scene.
  • ●Tsudome (family park) — Daytime site 40 min from central SapporoPR (subway to Sakaemachi + free shuttle bus). Snow slides, inner-tube rides, maze. Best for travellers with children; otherwise skippable.
  • ●Mini-sites along Sosei-gawa — Smaller sculpture clusters scattered along the Sosei River. Easy to walk through between the two main venues.
  • ●Odori Nishi 11-chome stage — International Snow Sculpture Contest site; smaller sculptures made by teams from 10+ countries. Charming and never crowded.

Where to stay (and why Susukino vs Odori matters)

SapporoPR's two central neighbourhoods are five subway stops apart, but during Snow Festival the choice is meaningful. Odori-area hotels put you a block from the main sculptures and let you return to the hotel to warm up every hour. Susukino hotels are 10–15 minutes further on foot but drop you in the middle of the izakaya and ramen scene — ideal if you want to sculpture-hop then eat crab until midnight. Avoid hotels beyond Sapporo Station: the walk back in -8°C after a late evening is not fun.

Getting to Sapporo and around during the festival

Everyone flies into New Chitose Airport (CTS). The JR Rapid Airport Line takes 37 minutes to SapporoPR Station for ¥1,150 and runs every 15 minutes until midnight. From Sapporo Station, Odori is one stop (¥200) on the Namboku Subway Line or a 10-minute walk through underground arcades — essential when the wind chill is -15°C. Taxis exist but Snow Festival traffic can push a 2 km ride past ¥2,000. Do not rent a car for the festival itself: Sapporo central parking is scarce and the city is laid out for walkers.

  • ●Buy a 1-day subway pass (¥830) for Snow Festival day — unlimited rides mean no fumbling for cash with frozen fingers.
  • ●Chikaho underground walkway connects SapporoPR Station, Odori and Susukino — the single most important piece of infrastructure during the festival.
  • ●Save the Hokkaido JR Rail Pass for day trips to Otaru, Hakodate or Noboribetsu; it is not worth it for SapporoPR-only stays.
  • ●Download the official festival map PDF from snowfes.com — venue layout changes slightly year to year.

What to wear for -8°C evenings

  • ●Base: Uniqlo Heattech Extra Warm top and leggings (buy on arrival at SapporoPR Esta if you forgot).
  • ●Mid-layer: fleece or down vest — a packable Uniqlo Ultra Light Down works surprisingly well under a shell.
  • ●Shell: waterproof hooded parka. Snow falls as powder but the Odori walkways get slushy.
  • ●Legs: ski pants or waterproof trousers over Heattech. Jeans soak and freeze.
  • ●Feet: insulated waterproof boots with lugs. Don Quijote in Susukino sells cheap grip-on-ice attachments for ¥500.
  • ●Hands: waterproof gloves plus liners. Smartphone-compatible fingertips save a lot of grief.
  • ●Face: beanie covering ears, Buff or neck gaiter. Sunscreen on sunny days — snow reflects UV.
  • ●Pocket: single-use hand warmers (kairo). Konbini sell them 10 for ¥500.

Day trips to pair with the festival

Three to five days in SapporoPR is more comfortable than two because the sculptures look different in daylight vs illumination, and the surrounding region is extraordinary in February. The three day trips below are all doable from a Sapporo hotel without changing accommodation.

  • ●Otaru Snow Light Path (Feb 7–15, 2027) — 32-minute JR train from SapporoPR, overlaps the Snow Festival. Canal lined with handmade snow lanterns from 5 PM. Our top recommendation.
  • ●Niseko day of skiing — 2.5 hr by bus; book a shuttle via Klook. Rental equipment and English ski lessons on-site.
  • ●Jozankei Onsen — 60 min bus from SapporoPR Station (¥790); day-use baths at Hotel Mikazuki or Nukumorino-Yado for ¥1,500. Falling snow + outdoor rotenburo = iconic Hokkaido.
  • ●Noboribetsu Hell Valley — 90 min by JR limited express. Sulphur steam vents, winter illumination of "Hell Valley", onsen town atmosphere.

FAQ

  • ●When is [Sapporo](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Sapporo&aid=8095781&label=auto-sapporo-autolink) Snow Festival 2027? February 4 (Thu) to February 11 (Thu, National Foundation Day). Tsudome opens February 3.
  • ●Is admission free? Yes, all three venues are free. Only paid elements are optional food/drinks (¥500–¥1,500 per item) and the Tsudome snow slide equipment rental (¥100–¥300).
  • ●Best day to go? First weekend (Feb 6–7) is busiest. Weeknights after Feb 8 are noticeably quieter. If forced to pick one evening, aim for Monday or Tuesday after 7 PM.
  • ●Can I see Odori during daytime too? Yes, sculptures are visible 24/7 but less dramatic. Go once in daylight (details visible) and once after dark (illumination).
  • ●How crowded is it really? The main Odori strip gets dense on weekend evenings (shuffling pace); weekday mornings you can walk freely.
  • ●Will there be food? Yes, Odori Nishi 6-chome has the "Hokkaido Food Park" — hairy crab, grilled scallops, miso ramen soup, Jingisukan, hot sake. Prices: ¥800–¥1,800 per item.
  • ●Is the festival wheelchair accessible? Main Odori paths are plowed and generally accessible, but some sculpture viewing areas have snow banks. Chikaho underground is step-free.
  • ●Can I take photos? Absolutely — bring a camera that handles -5°C (phone batteries drain fast in the cold; keep a spare warm in a pocket).
  • ●What if it rains or there is heavy snowfall? Festival continues. Light snow is atmospheric; heavy snow can briefly close some paths while plows work.
  • ●Should I visit all three sites? Odori is essential. Susukino is 20 minutes well spent. Tsudome only if travelling with kids.
  • ●How early should I arrive at Odori? For the best photos, arrive 20 minutes before sunset (around 4:30 PM in February) to see sculptures in blue hour + illumination transition.
  • ●Are there English-language guided [tour](https://www.klook.com/en-US/search/?query=Japan&tp_sub=japan)s? Yes, several operators run 2-3 hour evening walking tours (¥3,000–¥5,000); worth it on the first evening if you want context on the sculptures.
  • ●Is there a bag check or lockers? Coin lockers at Odori Station (¥400–¥700). No bag check at venues since there is no admission gate.
  • ●Can I bring my own alcohol? Yes, open containers are legal in Japan. Hot sake from food stalls or convenience-store wine are both common.
  • ●What is the single biggest mistake visitors make? Underestimating how cold -8°C with wind feels after 90 minutes outdoors. Plan a hot-drink break every 60-90 minutes.
