Sanja Matsuri
Third weekend of May

One of Tokyo's three great Shinto festivals at Asakusa's Senso-ji area. Wild street processions of 100+ portable shrines (mikoshi) carried through Asakusa over 3 days. Far more raw and energetic than the polished Kyoto festivals.
Aoi Matsuri (Kyoto)

One of Kyoto's three great festivals, dating to the 6th century. A 500-strong Heian-era procession in imperial court dress walks 8 km from the Imperial Palace to Kamigamo Shrine through the streets.
GREEN×EXPO 2027 (International Horticultural Expo, Yokohama)

GREEN×EXPO 2027 is an international horticultural expo held at the former Kamiseya Communication Facility in Yokohama from March 19 to September 26, 2027. The organisers describe it as an A1 class expo with the theme Scenery of the Future for Happiness, and say the opening will feature around 600 cherry trees of approximately 40 varieties. Entry requires a date and time reservation made through the official ticket site.
Jozankei Onsen Carp Streamer Festival (Keiryu Koinobori)

Sapporo, Hokkaido
About 400 carp streamers (koinobori) donated by households and workplaces across Hokkaido are displayed around Jozankei Onsen in Sapporo's Minami Ward. The event is organised by the Jozankei Tourist Association, which marks 2026 as its 40th year, and viewing is free. Display sites include Jozankei Gensen Park, Futami Park and Jozankei Shrine.
Hiraoka Plum Festival (Hiraoka Park)
Late April into May (2026: April 25 to May 10; 2027 dates not yet announced)
Sapporo, Hokkaido
The Hiraoka Plum Festival is held at Hiraoka Park in Kiyota Ward, Sapporo, where about 1,200 plum trees grow on a 6.5-hectare site. The Sapporo Tourism Association's 2026 notice lists a temporary shop selling plum soft-serve ice cream and guided plum grove tours on April 28 and April 30, with registration required. The park says plums in Sapporo usually flower in early May, around the same time as the cherry blossoms.
Nabana no Sato Illumination
October 17, 2026 – May 31, 2027 (closed January 6-7, 2027)
Kuwana, Mie
Winter illumination at Nabana no Sato, a flower park in Kuwana, Mie. The 2026-27 season runs from October 17, 2026 to May 31, 2027, and the park is closed on January 6 and 7, 2027. Gate prices are ¥2,700 or ¥3,200 depending on the period and include a ¥1,000 voucher; children below elementary school age enter free. December 23 to 25 are special days that need a date-specified ticket.

Fukuoka Hotaru-no-Sato

Kyushu's biggest firefly spot, in a forested valley 40 minutes from Fukuoka city. Wooden boardwalks let you walk among thousands of fireflies.
