Kobe Luminarie 2027 Returns Jan 29 - Feb 7: 32nd Edition of the Earthquake Memorial

Thirty-two years after the Great Hanshin Earthquake, the city's memorial of light is back - and the new late-January timing avoids the Tokyo Christmas crush.
The 32nd Kobe Luminarie - the memorial-of-light that began in 1995 after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake - is officially set for Friday, January 29 to Sunday, February 7, 2027. That is a ten-night run spanning the 32nd anniversary of the quake.
The news story here is the permanent calendar move. Since the 29th edition (2024), the Luminarie no longer runs in December - a decision designed to protect the galleria arches by splitting construction out of the typhoon tail season and shifting into the lower-wind January window. The 2027 edition is the fourth consecutive year on the new winter schedule.
