Sanja Matsuri
Third weekend of May

One of Tokyo's three great Shinto festivals at Asakusa's Senso-ji area. Wild street processions of 100+ portable shrines (mikoshi) carried through Asakusa over 3 days. Far more raw and energetic than the polished Kyoto festivals.
Aoi Matsuri (Kyoto)

One of Kyoto's three great festivals, dating to the 6th century. A 500-strong Heian-era procession in imperial court dress walks 8 km from the Imperial Palace to Kamigamo Shrine through the streets.
Nabana no Sato Illumination

Kuwana, Mie
Japan's most spectacular winter illumination. Millions of LED lights create dazzling tunnels and landscape scenes across this botanical garden. The 'tunnel of light' is unmissable.
Moriyama Hotaru Park

Moriyama, Shiga
Lake Biwa-area firefly sanctuary, one of Japan's three great firefly spots. Hotaru-no-Mori park preserves the only Genji-botaru habitat in central Kansai.
Fukuoka Hotaru-no-Sato

Kyushu's biggest firefly spot, in a forested valley 40 minutes from Fukuoka city. Wooden boardwalks let you walk among thousands of fireflies.
