Takayama Autumn Matsuri 2026: Yatai Floats & Night Illumination
2026-10-20 ยท 2 min read

The Takayama Autumn Matsuri showcases eleven centuries-old floats fitted with mechanical marionettes, culminating in a glowing lantern-lit procession through the old town.
When Takayama's lanterns flicker on at dusk, the floats look less like vehicles and more like moving shrines.

The Takayama Autumn Matsuri (็งใฎ้ซๅฑฑ็ฅญ), formally the Hachiman Festival, is held every October 9 and 10 in the old castle town of Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Together with the April Sanno Matsuri, it is considered one of Japan's three most beautiful float festivals, celebrated for its carved and lacquered yatai, mechanical karakuri marionettes, and candle-lit night processions through narrow Edo-era streets.
Dates and schedule
The festival runs on fixed dates each year. Day one features the morning deployment of the eleven yatai, karakuri performances in front of Sakurayama Hachimangu, and the evening Yomatsuri lantern procession. Day two centers on the mikoshi parade and additional karakuri performances. In the event of heavy rain, floats remain under their storage halls and the schedule adjusts.
| Date | Daytime | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 9 | Yatai display + karakuri 12:00 | Yomatsuri 18:00-21:00 |
| Oct 10 | Mikoshi parade from 09:00 | No night procession |
Highlights
- โ11 ornate yatai (floats) โ each owned by a neighborhood and preserved for generations, with lacquered carvings and gold leaf.
- โKarakuri marionettes โ complex clockwork puppets perform short dramas on top of designated floats; viewing lines form early.
- โYomatsuri night procession โ around 100 paper lanterns per float glow through the old town, considered the signature image of the festival.
- โHachimangu shrine rites โ Shinto ceremonies run alongside the float displays through both days.
How to get there
Takayama is reached from NagoyaPR in about 2 hours 20 minutes by the Hida limited express, or from Toyama in roughly 90 minutes on the same line. The old town, Sakurayama Hachimangu, and the yatai storage halls are all within a 20-minute walk of Takayama Station, making the festival one of the easiest major matsuri to see on foot.
Best viewing spots
- โSakurayama Hachimangu approach โ the main karakuri stage; arrive at least an hour early for a clear view.
- โKami-Sannomachi โ Takayama's preserved Edo street, atmospheric for daytime float viewing.
- โNakabashi Bridge โ the postcard spot where floats cross the Miyagawa River.
- โYomatsuri route โ line the quieter side streets after dark for closer lantern views than the main plaza.
The spring Sanno Matsuri (April 14-15) uses a different set of 12 floats from the southern half of the old town, while autumn draws its 11 yatai from the northern neighborhoods served by Hachimangu. Visitors who come for both see almost no overlap in the actual floats.
๐ฏBuy miyage early
Takayama's traditional wagashi shops, including the local kuri-kinton and mitarashi dango stalls, generally sell out by mid-afternoon on festival days. Pick up gifts in the morning.
FAQ
Does the night procession happen if it rains? Floats stay housed in their storage halls during rain to protect the lacquer and marionettes, and the Yomatsuri is cancelled rather than postponed. Are seats sold? Most viewing is free standing-room; some tourPR operators sell packages that include reserved space near the karakuri stage.
