Oshinkoshin Falls Shiretoko 2027: The 5-Minute Stop with the Big Payoff
2026-10-25 ยท 6 min read

Oshinkoshin Falls splits into twin cascades down a 50m basalt cliff on the road into Shiretoko. Five minutes from the car, free, one of Hokkaido's most-photographed waterfalls. Here's the quick guide.
Oshinkoshin Falls (ใชใทใณใณใทใณใฎๆป) splits halfway down into two parallel white cascades โ the reason locals also call it Futami-no-taki ("Twin View Falls"). It is one of Hokkaido's few "Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan" and the easiest Shiretoko stop that still earns a photo. Five minutes from your car, free, and open 24/7 โ this is the warm-up to the Shiretoko peninsula drive, not the main course.

Why it's worth 15 minutes
Shiretoko has bigger attractions (bear cruise, Five Lakes, Rausu orcas) and this is NOT one of them. But it sits directly on the road between Shari and Utoro, costs nothing, and gives a free "Shiretoko has arrived" photo stop. The twin-cascade split halfway down is unusual for Japanese waterfalls โ most are single-drop โ and the mist in summer is a welcome cooldown after the drive.

Getting there
- โBy car (easiest) โ From Utoro, drive 15 min west on Route 334 (direction Shari). The falls are signposted. Free parking right at the trailhead.
- โFrom Memanbetsu Airport โ 2 hr drive east on Route 39 โ Route 334. Falls are the last roadside stop before Utoro.
- โBy bus (seasonal) โ Shari Bus runs the "Shiretoko sightseeing bus" JuneโOctober that stops at Oshinkoshin on request. Check with Shari Bus Terminal.
- โTaxi from Utoro โ ยฅ2,500 one-way, 15 min. Only worth it if you don't have a car for other Shiretoko stops.

Best season
- โMay โ June โ Peak snowmelt flow; the waterfall is at its widest and most dramatic. Mist is cold.
- โJuly โ August โ Still strong flow, mist is cooling, surrounded by lush summer green.
- โSeptember โ October โ Autumn colours start late September; the surrounding cliffs turn red/gold.
- โNovember โ April โ Partial freeze from late December to March. The frozen waterfall is spectacular but access path is icy โ microspikes recommended.

FAQ
- โCan I walk behind the waterfall? No โ the viewing platform is in front. There is no path behind.
- โIs the sign in English? Yes โ the main sign has Japanese + English. Audio guide not available (not needed, 15-min stop).
- โCan I bring a drone? Technically not banned at Oshinkoshin itself, but Shiretoko National Park broadly discourages drones for wildlife reasons. Avoid.
- โWheelchair access? The lower platform is accessible by paved path. The upper viewing platform requires climbing ~50 stone steps.
- โAny food/toilets? No shop on site. Small toilet building year-round. Nearest food: Utoro (15 min drive east).
- โCan I visit at night? Technically open, but no lighting. Bear-active season (MayโOct) makes night visits unsafe.
- โHow does it compare to Fukuroda Falls (Ibaraki)? Fukuroda is bigger and has 4-tier structure. Oshinkoshin is smaller but trade-off is zero crowds and free parking.
