Okinawa in Winter 2027: Cherry Blossoms, Whales & Where to Stay

Okinawa's cherry blossoms open in winter, not spring. In Naha, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) observes the Hikanzakura, a deep-pink cherry whose normal first-bloom date is January 16. January and February are also humpback whale season around Zamami in the Kerama Islands, and Naha's average daily high stays around 20°C. For travellers from Taiwan, a short flight away, it is an easy winter trip. This guide gives JMA's bloom record, the 2027 festival dates that are confirmed (and the ones that are not), the whale-watching season and where to base yourself.

When do Okinawa's cherry blossoms open? JMA's Naha record

JMA's normal first-bloom date for Naha is January 16 and its normal full-bloom date is February 4. In 2026 the Naha tree reached first bloom on January 18 and full bloom on February 3, close to normal.

From 2021 to 2026, first bloom came between January 4 and January 18. Full bloom, in the years JMA recorded one, came between January 30 and February 5. In the north of the main island, the Nago City Tourism Association says the cherry trees at Nago Castle Park bloom from late January to mid-February.

2027 cherry blossom festivals: what is confirmed

The Nago City Tourism Association has announced the 64th Nago Sakura Matsuri for Saturday, January 30 and Sunday, January 31, 2027. The pedestrian zone runs from 11:00 to 20:30 on both days. The related Hana-no-Sato Garden Festa runs January 29–31 (9:00–18:30) inside Nago Fishing Port, which is also the temporary car park. Motobu and Nakijin had not published 2027 dates when we checked in early November 2026. For reference, the 48th Motobu Yaedake Sakura Matsuri ran from January 17, 2026 and was extended to February 8, with a free shuttle bus during the festival (Motobu Town Tourism Association). The 19th Nakijin Gusuku Sakura Matsuri ran from January 31 to February 8, 2026 (Nakijin Tourism Association). Whale watching: season, price and where boats leave

The Zamami Village Whale Watching Association's 2026 season ran from January 8 to March 25, 2026. Its 2027 season dates had not been posted in early November 2026. Okinawa's official tourism site describes late December to early April as the best whale-watching season each year.

To reach Zamami, take a taxi from Naha Airport to Tomari Port, which Zamami Village puts at 10–15 minutes. The ferry leaves from in front of the Tomarin building and the Queen Zamami high-speed boat from Tomari Port's north bank, about a 10-minute walk from the Tomarin ticket office. Boats from Naha call at both Zamami Port and Aka Port (Zamami Village). Whale-watching tours also sail from the main island: for the 2025 season, Okinawa's official tourism site listed operators in Naha's Minatomachi, at Hamagawa Fishing Port in Chatan and in Motobu (Okinawa Story).

These are JMA's 1991–2020 normals for Naha (JMA). The mean wind speed is 5.3 m/s in January and 5.2 m/s in February, mostly from the north. Pack layers and a windproof jacket, especially for boat trips.

Where to stay and how to get around

Naha is the practical base. The Yui Rail monorail runs from Naha Airport Station to Tedako-Uranishi, with 19 stations, so a hotel near a station keeps airport days simple. Fares and timetables are on Yui Rail's official site. Tomari Port, for Zamami, is 10–15 minutes from the airport by taxi. The three cherry blossom festivals are in Nago, Motobu and Nakijin in the north of the main island, so one or two nights up north saves long day trips from Naha.
