Why Kerama
If you want Okinawan water the way the postcards promise โ turquoise instead of greenish, with 50 m underwater visibility โ Kerama is the honest answer. The main Okinawa island reefs are mostly degraded or built over; the Kerama islands were made a national park in 2014 and the water quality shows. Zamami is the easiest overnight base; Tokashiki is bigger with more white-sand beaches (Aharen is the headliner); tiny Aka is for day-trippers who like empty swimming coves. Humpback whales also winter here (January-March); dedicated whale-watching boats run from both main islands.
