Nagoya Castle 2027: Visitor Guide to the Golden Shachihoko Castle
2026-10-25 · 8 min read

Nagoya Castle's golden shachihoko and the fully-restored Honmaru Palace make it one of central Japan's can't-miss castles. Here's the 2027 visitor guide.
Nagoya Castle (名古屋城) was Tokugawa Ieyasu's gift to his ninth son in 1612 — the largest-footprint castle in Edo Japan, and the political anchor of the Tokai region for 250 years. The twin golden shachihoko (tiger-headed carp) on the roof became Nagoya's icon; locals call anything high-quality 'shachihoko of X'. The main keep closed for seismic retrofit in 2018 (reopening unknown), but the just-reopened Honmaru Palace is actually the better experience right now.

⚡Main keep closed — Honmaru Palace is the current highlight
The reinforced-concrete main keep (1959 reconstruction) closed in 2018 for seismic work. Reopening target is uncertain (originally planned to be rebuilt in wood by 2022, now delayed). The Honmaru Palace reconstruction (completed 2018) uses traditional joinery and is spectacularly worth visiting even if the main keep is closed.

Honmaru Palace — the current star of the castle
The Honmaru Palace (本丸御殿) is a 2009–2018 reconstruction using traditional carpentry: hinoki cypress joinery, hand-painted screens, gold-leaf ceilings. Not a replica of the Meiji-era castle — this is a FULL rebuild of the 1615 Tokugawa residence from original plans and photographs. Absolutely included in your ¥500 ticket.
- ●Omotemukae (reception hall) — First room; gold-leaf tiger paintings commissioned 2010.
- ●Taimenjo (formal audience chamber) — Where Tokugawa family members received daimyo lords.
- ●Jorakuden (private residence) — Shogun's bed-chamber and tea room; most ornate section.
- ●Yudono-shoin (bath-house study) — Rebuilt in 2018; final addition completing the palace.
Golden Shachihoko
The two golden shachihoko (tiger-headed carp) on the roof are the castle's icon. Current replicas (1959) weigh 1.3 tons each with 88 kg of gold leaf. Occasionally rotated to a ground display for close-up viewing — check the official event schedule.
