Fushimi Inari Shrine 2027: Thousand Torii Hiking Guide
2026-10-25 · 9 min read

The thousand-torii hike at Fushimi Inari is one of Kyoto's defining images and the most-photographed site in Japan. Here is how to time your visit, hike to the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, and avoid the mid-morning tour crush.
Senbon Torii — the thousand gates — is a bit of a misnomer. Fushimi Inari actually has over 10,000 vermillion torii climbing Mt. Inari, each donated by a company or family across the last 1,300 years. The hike to the Yotsutsuji viewpoint takes 45 minutes; the summit loop takes 2–3 hours. Both are free and open around the clock.

⚡⏰ Peak-season rooms go first

The hike up Mt. Inari
The approach from JR Inari Station leads straight to the Romon Gate (donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589) and then the main hall. Keep going past the main hall and you reach Senbon Torii — the famous paired corridor that splits around the Oku-no-In. From there the trail continues up Mt. Inari past dozens of smaller sub-shrines (otsuka) honoring the fox messengers (kitsune) of Inari, the Shinto god of rice, sake and prosperity. The Yotsutsuji intersection at the half-point gives the best city view and is where most visitors turn back. The summit (233m) adds another 45 minutes but offers less view and more atmosphere.
- ●Senbon Torii — the paired tunnel 10 minutes above the main hall; most photographed stretch.
- ●Oku-no-In — the inner shrine where you can tilt the omokaru-ishi stones for a wish.
- ●Yotsutsuji viewpoint — half-point intersection with a view of southern Kyoto.
- ●Summit (233m) — multiple sub-shrines; peaceful but not scenic.
- ●Vermilion Café — small station-side teahouse for a post-hike iced matcha.
Timing — the one thing that matters
- ●Best photo window — before 7:00 AM. The gates are empty. Period.
- ●After-dark window — the shrine is lit by lanterns; walk the Senbon Torii after 20:00 for near-empty gates.
- ●Worst window — 10:00–15:00. Tour buses stack up; the Senbon Torii becomes a slow-moving queue.
- ●Weekday vs weekend — Tuesday–Thursday are quieter; Saturday afternoon is the single busiest window of the week.

The Keihan Main Line stops at Fushimi-Inari Station (east side) and connects well from Gion-Shijo. Both approaches are inside Kyoto's walkable zone — no bus or taxi required.
