Mt Fuji official climbing season 2026 is July 1 โ€“ September 10. New ยฅ2,000 entry fee, 4,000 climber daily cap. Here's the complete route guide + how to catch sunrise (goraiko).

Mt Fuji is not a walk. It's a 6-8 hour climb at altitude in unpredictable weather. But watching sunrise (goraiko) from the summit at 3,776m is a life-list experience.

Mountain huts (must book ahead)

Booking mandatory. Huts sell out 2-3 months ahead for peak weekends. Cost ยฅ8,000-13,000/night including 1 dinner + 1 breakfast. Shared bunk-bed style (no privacy). Bring your own toilet paper โ€” some huts charge ยฅ100-200 for bathroom.

  • โ—Fujisan Hotel (8th station) โ€” most popular, book 3 months ahead
  • โ—Taishikan (7th station) โ€” good English service
  • โ—Toriiso (8th station) โ€” highest hut, best for late-night summit push
  • โ—Booking method: hut websites in Japanese only; use rakuten-travel.co.jp or ask hotel concierge

Essential gear

  • โ—Hiking boots (ankle support) โ€” Uniqlo trainers WILL fail you
  • โ—Layers: base + fleece + waterproof shell (summit temp 5-10ยฐC, can drop to 0ยฐC at night)
  • โ—Headlamp with extra batteries (essential for night summit)
  • โ—Hiking poles (buy at 5th station ยฅ1,500-2,500)
  • โ—2L water (huts sell water ยฅ400/500ml โ€” plan accordingly)
  • โ—High-energy snacks: chocolate, dried fruit, energy bars
  • โ—Rain gear (weather changes fast at altitude)
  • โ—Cash ยฅ5,000-10,000 (toilet fees, hut extras, souvenirs)

Altitude sickness โ€” the real threat

3,776m is the altitude where 20-30% of climbers get altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness). Prevention: climb slowly (aim 300m elevation gain per hour), stay hydrated (3L water total), avoid alcohol, spend the night at 3,000m+ before summit push. If symptoms severe, DESCEND immediately.

The 'don't climb Mt Fuji' argument

Consider: Mt Fuji is prettier as a VIEW than a climb. The mountain is bare volcanic gravel, no trees, no scenic beauty. If you want to say you climbed it, do it. If you just want a Mt Fuji experience, consider viewing from HakonePR, Kawaguchiko, or Chureito Pagoda instead.
