One of Japan's three great float festivals returns in less than six weeks - and the return train from Seibu-Chichibu will stop running on the main night.
Chichibu Yomatsuri 2026 - one of only three major float festivals in Japan to be held on a UNESCO-registered Yama-Hoko-Yatai float-festival list - lands on Wednesday December 2 and Thursday December 3 this year. The main parade and fireworks are the night of the 3rd.
The news for 2026 travelers is the rail situation. Seibu Chichibu Railway is expected to cut power to its overhead wires between Chichibu and Kagemori stations roughly 19:30-22:30 on Dec 3 to let the floats cross the tracks. A free replacement bus runs the gap, but the quickest return to Tokyo is to book the late Laview out of Seibu-Chichibu well in advance.

- ●Dec 3 ~19:30-22:00 - approximately 2.5 hours of winter fireworks over the city
Why it is a once-a-year photo
Chichibu is one of a very small number of Japanese festivals that pairs full tama-yagura float lanterns with winter fireworks - the dry December air gives the smoke almost no lift, so each shell holds its shape against the mountain backdrop. Local photographers rate it as technically harder but visually richer than any of the summer Hanabi.
