Awa Odori Tokushima 2027: Japan's Largest Dance Festival
2026-10-25 ยท 10 min read

Awa Odori packs 1.3 million spectators into a Shikoku port city for four nights of a 400-year-old dance โ here's how to see it without burning your trip plan.
By the second night in Tokushima you stop watching Awa Odori and start walking inside it. Four hundred years of two-step dance, 100,000 performers, lanterns strung above every narrow lane โ this is the one Japanese festival where the audience line and the dance line blur on purpose.

History + what makes this festival special
Awa Odori (้ฟๆณข่ธใ) traces to 1587, when Lord Hachisuka Iemasa reportedly handed out sake to townspeople celebrating Tokushima Castle's completion. The crowd began improvising a two-step shuffle โ and 440 years later, 100,000 dancers in roughly 1,000 ren (dance teams) keep that same drunken-looking rhythm alive for four nights every August. It is the single largest dance festival in Japan by participant count, dwarfing even Nagoya's Nippon Domannaka.
- โScale โ ~1.3 million spectators over four days; central Tokushima closes to cars from 18:00.
- โMen's vs women's dance โ otoko-odori (crouched, athletic) and onna-odori (upright, straw hats, raised arms) differ by posture and footwear (geta vs. ashida).
- โThe chant โ 'Odoru aho ni miru aho, onaji aho nara odoranya son son!' (Fools dance, fools watch โ same fool either way, so dance!).
- โSignature instrument โ the two-note shamisen plus bamboo kane bells creates the hypnotic Zomeki rhythm.
- โWhy visit here, not Koenji โ Tokyo copies the format in late August, but only in Tokushima do you get the river stages, the castle backdrop, and the 400-year-old ren.

What to eat here
Tokushima is a sudachi-citrus and chicken country โ the two best local pairings for sweaty festival nights. Awa chicken and Tokushima ramen (sweet-soy pork belly broth with a raw egg) are the standards; drink Awa Ban-cha roasted summer tea between stages.
- โTokushima ramen (ๅพณๅณถใฉใผใกใณ) โ ยฅ700-900 โ Dark soy-pork broth, raw egg, rare 'brown' style unique to this prefecture.
- โAwa odori chicken skewers (้ฟๆณขๅฐพ้ถ) โ ยฅ400-700 โ Local heritage breed, grilled over bincho at every festival stall.
- โSudachi highball (ใใ ใก) โ ยฅ500-700 โ Local citrus with shochu or whisky; dozens of izakaya pour it stronger than Tokyo bars.
- โFish-paste chikuwa (ใกใใ) โ ยฅ200-400 โ Grilled on a bamboo stick, Tokushima's answer to a hot-dog roll.

FAQ
- โWhen exactly is Awa Odori 2027? August 12-15, 2027 โ fixed dates every year regardless of weekday.
- โAre the dates confirmed? As of October 2026, Tokushima Tourism Federation has not posted an official 2027 announcement, but the festival has held fixed Aug 12-15 dates for over 400 years.
- โIs the festival cancelled in rain? Light rain is OK; typhoon-level rain cancels individual Enbujo stages but not the street dancing.
- โCan I dance as a [tour](https://www.klook.com/en-US/search/?query=Japan&tp_sub=japan)ist? Yes โ the 'Niwaka-ren' amateur ren is open to anyone with no booking; join at Ryogokubashi-minami Odori Hiroba around 19:30.
- โWhere should I stay if Tokushima is full? Naruto City (JR 40 min + bus), Awaji Island (bus 60 min via Awaji-Naruto Bridge), or Takamatsu (JR 70 min).
- โIs paid or free seating better? Paid stages give photography-friendly front rows and 2-ren rotations per 90-min slot; free streets give atmosphere and festival food access.
- โHow crowded is the airport on Aug 12 arrival day? Tokushima Airport doubles capacity Aug 11-12; book flight 60 days out for sub-ยฅ25,000 fares.
- โCan I use [JR Pass](https://www.klook.com/en-US/activity/6415-japan-rail-pass-jr-pass-japan/) to reach Tokushima? Only partially โ Pass covers Honshu Shinkansen + JR Shikoku line, but not Highway Bus from Osaka. Shikoku Rail Pass (3-day ยฅ9,500) is better value for region-wide travel.
- โIs Awa Odori a good family trip? Yes โ children ride parents' shoulders in free zones; paid stages allow strollers with aisle seats. Noise peaks around 100 dB near drum stages.
- โWhat's open on Aug 15, the last day? The Niwaka-ren amateur dance moves to shopping arcades and the atmosphere stays until midnight; most stages wrap by 22:30.
