Niihama Taiko Festival 2027: Ehime's Fighting Festival
2026-10-25 ยท 9 min read

Ehime's Niihama Taiko Matsuri is Shikoku's most physical float festival โ three days of gold-leafed drum floats, ritual kaki-kurabe clashing, and almost zero English coverage.
At Niihama they call it a kenka matsuri โ the fighting festival โ and they are not being metaphorical. Fifty gold-leafed taikodai, each 5.5 m tall and crewed by 150 men, deliberately slam into each other on the riverbank until someone's lacquer cracks. It is Shikoku at its most unfiltered.

History + what makes this festival special
Niihama Taiko Matsuri (ๆฐๅฑ ๆตๅคช้ผ็ฅญใ) is the autumn festival of Yamane Shrine and five other local shrines, held every October 16 through 18. The city's wealth from the Besshi copper mine funded a 300-year arms race in float ornamentation โ each of the 50+ modern taikodai (ๅคช้ผๅฐ) is covered in silk embroidery, gilded wood, and metalwork worth tens of millions of yen. The signature event is kaki-kurabe (่ใ่ผใน): two floats are shouldered by their crews and ritually crashed against each other to decide bragging rights. Injuries do happen; the festival is intentionally called a 'fighting festival'.
- โScale โ 50-55 taikodai across 6 neighborhood blocks; each float needs 150 men to shoulder.
- โPre-festival โ The Ojoin (Uwadogawa) district starts a day early on October 15 with its own 11-float cycle.
- โKaki-kurabe climax โ October 17 afternoon at Isono riverbank; this is the famous 'fight' with crowd barriers.
- โWhy visit โ Zero tour-bus traffic, no English-language overlay, and one of Japan's loudest matsuri (drum rhythms audible 2 km away).
- โPair naturally with Saijo Matsuri โ Oct 14-17 in neighboring Saijo โ two major Ehime float festivals in one week.

What to eat here
Niihama is Shikoku's industrial-port side, so expect copper-town comfort food rather than Matsuyama's elegant kaiseki. Grill-stall culture dominates festival nights โ look for yakitori shops that stay open past midnight along Shoten-gai.
- โNiihama yakitori (ๆฐๅฑ ๆต็ผ้ณฅ) โ ยฅ120-250/stick โ Beef-tongue and Awa chicken; the Yamane neighborhood has 10+ decades-old shops.
- โImabari yakibuta tamagoyaki โ ยฅ700 โ Local breakfast dish of pork over rice with sweet omelet.
- โMikan citrus sours (ใฟใใใตใฏใผ) โ ยฅ500-650 โ Ehime is Japan's #1 mandarin producer; every izakaya serves fresh-squeezed.
- โJyakoten (ใใใๅคฉ) โ ยฅ200 โ Fried fish-paste cake, Ehime's festival-food staple.

- โOshima + Shimanami Kaido cycling โ ยฅ500 rental; 70 km island-hopping bridge route from Imabari (~1 hr north).
- โMatsuyama Castle + Dogo Onsen day combo โ ยฅ3,000; JR Shiokaze connects Niihama to Matsuyama in 70 min.
