Why Aogashima

Aogashima is the most remote inhabited place in Tokyo prefecture and one of the strangest places in Japan: a volcano inside a volcano, where the inner cone rises inside the outer caldera's bowl, both of them green with tree ferns and pines. The village sits on the north rim; the inner caldera holds a geothermal sauna that cooks eggs in jet-steam vents. Fewer than 200 permanent residents live here, and most visitors stay in one of the handful of minshuku. Expect zero convenience stores, two restaurants, no ATMs that take foreign cards, and spectacular night skies.

  • โ—Inner caldera (Maruyama) โ€” walk down into the second volcanic cone
  • โ—Fureai Sauna โ€” geothermal steam sauna, ยฅ300
  • โ—Jiyonie Lookout โ€” classic double-caldera photo
  • โ—Shio no michi โ€” salt made from caldera steam
  • โ—Jiheizan Shrine โ€” the island's main shrine on the rim
  • โ—Stargazing โ€” Bortle 1 skies, no light pollution

FAQ

  • โ—Is Aogashima dangerous to visit? No active eruption since 1785, but it is designated Level 1 (potential for eruption). Monitor JMA alerts.
  • โ—Can I book the helicopter online? No โ€” Toho Air phone-only, 30 days before departure.
  • โ—What if the ferry cancels? Try the helicopter, or add a buffer day on Hachijojima and go the next morning.
  • โ—ATMs? Only the post office โ€” bring enough yen in advance.
  • โ—Food? Two small restaurants + minshuku meals. Pack snacks.
  • โ—Mobile signal? Yes, surprisingly good โ€” carriers all cover the rim.
  • โ—Can I do day trips to Aogashima? Technically no โ€” flight schedules make it one-way-per-day.
  • โ—Best time of year? May-June and October are driest. Avoid typhoon window August-September.
  • โ—Can I visit the inner caldera alone? Yes โ€” a paved road runs down from the rim.
  • โ—Any English spoken? Minimal. A translation app and some basic Japanese politeness go a long way.
