Kurama-dera Mountain Temple Kyoto 2027: Day Trip, Hike & Onsen Combo
2026-10-22 · 10分鐘閱讀

The complete 2027 day-trip guide to Kurama-dera: the Eizan Railway maple tunnel, the Kurama-to-Kibune hike, the onsen at the base, and when to go.
Kurama-dera sits halfway up a cedar-covered mountain 30 minutes north of central Kyoto. The visit is three parts: the Eizan Railway maple tunnel to get there, the uphill temple hike with Pure Land vistas, and the onsen at the base when your legs give out. Few Kyoto trips plan for this. Everyone who does, remembers it.

Hours and Eizan Railway illumination dates verified against the Kurama-dera office and Eizan Electric Railway. The maple-tunnel section of the line runs special night trains during peak autumn.

The journey IS the destination (Eizan Railway)
The Eizan Electric Railway runs from Demachiyanagi in central Kyoto to Kurama Station — a 30-minute single-track mountain line. The highlight is the 'momiji tunnel' section between Ichihara and Ninose stations, where maple trees arch over the tracks. In November the line runs special slow 'momiji illumination' trains that stop in the tunnel at night for 2-3 minutes of pure red glow. The right-side seat (going up) has the best view. The Eizan railway is not covered by JR PassPR; buy a one-day Kurama-Kibune round-trip ticket (~¥1,800) at Demachiyanagi.
The Kurama-dera temple
Founded in 770 CE, Kurama-dera is a Tendai-sect temple with a unique spiritual lineage — one of its three deities is Mao-son, a 'king of conquerors from Venus' sometimes called Earth's first spiritual guardian. The 1 km uphill walk from the station to the main hall passes 8 subordinate halls; a cable car exists for those who cannot hike (¥200 one-way). The main hall (Hondo) stands on a terrace with sweeping northern KyotoPR views; the adjacent Reihoden museum holds the famous Mao-son statue. From here the hike continues over the ridge and down to Kibune village.
The Kurama-Kibune hike
- ●Start — Kurama Station, buy temple ticketPR at the main gate.
- ●Climb 20 min — Niomon gate, Yuki-jinja Shrine (small, atmospheric).
- ●Mountain path 15 min — Steep but shaded; cedar roots form natural steps.
- ●Main hall 10 min — Panoramic views, meditation terrace.
- ●Ridge trail 20 min — Pass the Sojo-ga-tani pit (legendary tengu training site).
- ●Descent 20 min — Through cedar forest down to Kibune village.
- ●Finish — Kibune's riverside kaiseki restaurants and Kifune Shrine.
Kifune Shrine and Kurama Onsen
At the far end of the hike Kifune Shrine sits on a hillside above the Kibune River, famous for its red lantern-lit stone staircase — one of KyotoPR's most Instagrammed single images. In summer Kibune's riverside restaurants build platforms over the river ('kawadoko') serving kaiseki over the stream; in winter the shrine is lit nightly against the snow. Back at the base of the mountain, Kurama Onsen offers indoor and outdoor baths (¥1,000-2,500, 10:30-20:30) — perfect post-hike recovery before the train back to Kyoto.
