History + what makes Mino washi special

Mino sits in Gifu Prefecture's Udatsu Historic District - a 2-block Edo-era preserved white-wall merchant town. Washi has been made here since 756 CE, when Mino paper first appeared on Shosoin treasure records. The craft reached its peak in the Edo period when Mino shoji-paper became the standard sliding-door paper for Japan's samurai houses. Today only 15 full-time washi-making families remain, down from 1,000+ in 1920. Each sheet of hon-mino is made from kozo (paper mulberry) bark cooked, beaten, suspended in water, pulled across a bamboo screen, then air-dried on wood planks. UNESCO listed the craft in 2014 as part of 'Washi: Craftsmanship of Traditional Japanese Hand-Made Paper'.
