11月末京都已過峰值,但九州、瀨戶內、東京低地仍有十餘處滿紅。本篇填補多數指南忽略的 2026 年「遅紅葉」空檔期。

Most koyo guides end at mid-November and leave you guessing. If your trip falls in late November or early December, the usual Kyoto / Nikko / Kamikochi recommendations are already past peak. These 10 spots are specifically where the color *lingers* into the gap most guides ignore.

The core principle: Japan's koyo season moves from north to south and from high elevation to low. Nikko and Kamikochi peak in October because they're high and north. KyotoPR's famous spots peak around November 20-25. Low-elevation southern and coastal spots keep peak color into early December because their first frost arrives weeks later than inland Japan. This guide lists where that late window actually works for 2026.

💡How to read peak estimates

Dates below are based on 5-year averages from the Japan Meteorological Agency and typical peak timing reported by regional tourPRism offices. Always confirm live status 2-3 days before travel via the live forecast widget — a warm November shifts everything 5-7 days later.

The late-koyo map at a glance

RegionTypical peakWhy it stays late
Kyushu (Dazaifu, Yufuin)Nov 25 – Dec 10Southernmost mainland Japan + mild coastal climate
Hiroshima (Miyajima, Sandankyo)Nov 20 – Dec 5Setouchi coast + warm Pacific influence
Tokyo lowlands (Rikugien, Mt. Takao)Nov 25 – Dec 8Urban heat island delays peak by 1-2 weeks vs mountains
Shikoku (Oboke, Konpira-san)Nov 20 – Dec 5Remote valleys with mild winters
Osaka (Minoo Park)Nov 25 – Dec 5Low elevation + urban buffer

1. Minoo Park, Osaka — late Nov to early Dec

A 30-minute train ride from central OsakaPR, Minoo Park's 3km trail along the river to the 33m waterfall is lined with maples that typically hit peak around November 25-30. The famous fried maple-leaf tempura (momiji tempura) sold at trail-side stalls is itself a 1,300-year tradition. Low altitude + proximity to warm Osaka city = latest-peaking major maple spot in Kansai.

  • ●Access: Hankyu Minoo Line from Umeda, 30 min total
  • ●Entry: Free
  • ●Best photo spot: The waterfall backdrop in late afternoon (3-4 PM)
  • ●Nearby: Katsuo-ji Temple (famous for daruma dolls, also peaks late)

2. Mt. Takao, Tokyo — late Nov to early Dec

Takao-san is TokyoPR's own late-peak spot, 50 minutes from Shinjuku on the Keio Line. The chairlift and cable car both run through peak season, and the mountain's 599m elevation keeps it in the sweet spot where mountains have already dropped their color but the valley trees haven't started yet. Expect weekend crowds — go on a weekday if you can.

⚡Weekend crowds are real

Takao-san on a peak-koyo Saturday is comparable to Shibuya scramble: shoulder-to-shoulder on trail 1. Go Tue-Thu for a 10x better experiencePR, or arrive before 7 AM on weekends.

3. Rikugien Garden, Tokyo — late Nov to early Dec

This Edo-period strolling garden in Komagome runs special evening illumination of its 400 maples during peak koyo (typically Nov 20 – Dec 5). The illumination is calibrated to the actual peak, so if the season is late the dates shift. Entry fee ¥300.

4. Miyajima (Momijidani Park), Hiroshima — late Nov to early Dec

The famous floating torii shrine island also has one of western Japan's best late-peak maple valleys. Momijidani (literally 'Maple Valley') sits behind Itsukushima Shrine. The 2026 peak estimate is November 20-30 based on 5-year averages. Combine with a day trip from HiroshimaPR for the best photo — torii at low tide + maples backdrop.

5. Dazaifu Tenmangu, Fukuoka — late Nov to mid-Dec

Kyushu's main shrine, in a town 30 min from FukuokaPR. The approach to the main hall is lined with ancient maples that peak around November 25 – December 10. Nearby, Komyoz enji Temple's rock garden framed by maples is one of Kyushu's most-photographed autumn scenes.

6. Yufuin & Beppu, Oita (Kyushu) — late Nov to early Dec

Combine late maples with onsen. Yufuin's Kinrinko pond with morning mist and surrounding maples typically peaks around November 25-30. Beppu's Hells (jigoku) hot springs area has gardens that peak into early December. Pair the two in a 2-night onsen trip.

7. Sandankyo Gorge, Hiroshima — mid to late Nov

A 13km gorge in HiroshimaPR prefecture rated one of Japan's five most scenic gorges. Peak maples typically November 15-25. Less crowded than Miyajima; good day trip from Hiroshima by direct bus (90 min).

8. Oboke Gorge, Tokushima (Shikoku) — late Nov

Shikoku's remote Iya Valley area. Boat tourPRs along Oboke Gorge through peak maples (typically Nov 20-30) are one of Shikoku's hidden autumn experiences. Combine with the famous Iya kazurabashi vine bridges.

9. Konpira-san, Kagawa (Shikoku) — late Nov to early Dec

The 785-step climb to Kagawa's famous mountain shrine passes through maple forest that typically peaks November 25 – December 5. Reward: hot sanuki udon at the base after. Can be done as a day trip from Takamatsu.

10. Nagatoro, Saitama — late Nov

90 minutes from Ikebukuro, the Chichibu river valley maples peak around November 20-25. The pleasure boat trip through the gorge during peak color is a classic TokyoPR-area day trip. More accessible than Takao-san and far less crowded.

Three practical rules for late-koyo travel in Japan

  • ●Book hotels 2 weeks ahead at most. Late-koyo demand is a fraction of mid-November demand. You lose nothing by booking just before.
  • ●Check live status 2-3 days before. A warm November shifts everything by a week. If you're flexible, swap destinations based on real peak reports.
  • ●Combine koyo with onsen. Late November is when onsen towns feel peak-magical — cold mornings, mist on the water, red leaves. HakonePR, Yufuin, and Kinosaki are all at their best.
