How to secure remaining official seats

  • Check the official Sumida-Hanabi website every Wednesday 10:00 JST — that's when cancellations get re-released
  • Set up a browser refresh extension for the ticketPR page — inventory sells out in 60 seconds each release
  • Have Rakuten Pay or Amazon Pay set up — checkout fails often with credit cards under high load
  • Site 2 is technically LESS scenic than Site 1, but views are 90% as good and B/C seats are still bookable
  • Do NOT buy from resale sites — Sumida Committee cancels resold ticketsPR on the day

🎯Pro move: riverside restaurant packages

Restaurants along the river offer fireworks viewing packages — dinner + reserved terrace seat. Range: ¥18,000–¥45,000/person. Higher cost but INCLUDES 2-course dinner + open bar + guaranteed view + toilet access. Search Klook for Sumida dinner packagesPR — they aggregate 12 riverside restaurants.

Best free viewing spots (backup plan)

If you can't get paid seats, these free spots still have decent views if you arrive by 3–4 PM. Bring a small mat, drinks, and DO NOT block the riverside walkway (police will move you).

  • Sumida Park (west bank) — closest to Site 1, best view, arrive 2 PM
  • Asakusa Riverside Walkway — Site 1 view, good crowd control, arrive 3 PM
  • Kototoi Bridge north side — Site 2 view, less crowded, arrive 4 PM
  • [Tokyo](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Tokyo) Skytree Sumida area — distant but no crowd, arrive 5 PM
  • Ryogoku Bridge — Site 2 view, good backup, arrive 4 PM

Free spot crowding is EXTREME

1 million people = arriving 15 min late = you'll be 200 meters back behind 40 rows of people. You'll see nothing. Arrive 5-6 hours early or accept the reality that free spots require commitment.

Hotel strategy: where to stay for fireworks

  • Asakusa (best base) — 5 min walk to viewing, next-day Skytree access, find Asakusa hotelsPR)
  • Ryogoku — Site 2 side, cheaper hotels, still 15 min walk to river
  • Ueno — 10 min train to Asakusa, more hotel availability, browse Ueno hotelsPR
  • Shinjuku (avoid) — 40 min post-fireworks return chaos, packed trains until 23:30
  • Riverside ryokan — for the ultimate experiencePR, most sold out but check daily

Transport: getting there and back

  • Best arriving station: Asakusa (TokyoPR Metro Ginza / Toei Asakusa / Tobu Skytree Lines) — arrive by 4 PM
  • Alternative: Kuramae or Honjo-Azumabashi Stations if Asakusa is too packed
  • Post-fireworks return: Trains for 40-60 minutes after finish are BRUTAL — plan to walk 15 min to a further station like Ueno
  • Absolute best: Book a nearby hotel and walk back
  • Taxi: Give up. Fares double, wait times 90+ min, roads blocked

What to bring

  • Portable phone charger (crowds jam signal, GPS dies)
  • Small waterproof mat (concrete gets uncomfortable)
  • Insect repellent (July riverside = mosquitoes)
  • Water and snacks (all local konbini sell out by 6 PM)
  • Small folding fan (temperature 28-32°C at 7 PM)
  • Cash ¥5,000+ (konbini card readers fail under 4G congestion)

Final decision framework

If budget allows: book a restaurant terrace package (¥25,000-40,000/person including dinner + guaranteed view + toilet). If budget is tight but you want a seat: hit the Wednesday 10:00 official cancellation drop for B/C seats. If truly free: arrive at Sumida Park by 2 PM, bring supplies, and accept crowd conditions. Book any accommodation NOW — Asakusa hotels are the fastest-selling weekend of the year.
