Sensoji is Tokyo's oldest and most-visited temple. Here is how to see it properly: timing, side gates, Nakamise strategy, and the shrine next door most people miss.

Sensoji sees over 30 million visitors a year. By 10 AM any day of the week, the Nakamise shopping street is wall-to-wall tour groups and the giant red lantern photo spot has a 15-minute queue. The temple itself is open 24 hours. The trick is knowing when to arrive.

💡Last content review: October 2026

Hours, hidden gates and Nakamise shop opening times verified against local merchants and the temple association. The eastern Nitenmon approach is officially recommended as the quieter route by Asakusa TourPRism.

The four gates (not just Kaminarimon)

Most visitors photograph the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) and enter through it directly into Nakamise. There are three other gates. If you want a clean photo of the main hall without a tourPR group behind you, enter through one of these alternatives and loop back to Kaminarimon for the exit shot.

  • ●Kaminarimon (south, main) — The giant red lantern; iconic but always crowded.
  • ●Hozomon (inner south gate) — The 'treasure gate'; three massive straw sandals hanging on the back are a lucky-charm pilgrimage site.
  • ●Nitenmon (east) — The quietest entry; passes Awashimado shrine on the way in.
  • ●West Gate (Nishi-mon) — Opens near Asakusa Shrine, perfect for the Sanja Matsuri season crowd avoidance.

What most visitors miss

Asakusa Shrine (Sanja-sama) sits beside the main hall; most tourPRists never notice it. It is a Shinto shrine honoring the three fishermen who found the Kannon statue that Sensoji was built around. Entry is free, grounds are quiet even at peak hours, and it is the launch point for the massive Sanja Matsuri festival in mid-May.

The small side hall Awashimado (Awashima Hall), between Nitenmon and the main hall, is covered in thousands of embroidered needle-offerings from seamstresses across Japan. Open 09:00-16:30; worth 10 minutes.

Nakamise shopping tactics

  • ●Open from 09:30 — if you arrive at 09:00 the street is almost empty.
  • ●Try ningyo-yaki (small sweet cakes shaped like Buddhist figures) from Kimuraya; the oldest shop on the street.
  • ●Buy a yukata or sensu (folding fan) at the mid-street specialty shops; prices firmer than Nippori but much more variety.
  • ●Agemanju (deep-fried sweet bun) from Asakusa Kokonoe is the signature street snack.
  • ●Avoid the ¥500 'authentic Japanese sword' knockoff shops near the gate — tourPRist traps.
  • ●Shop closing is 19:00 for most, 20:00 for food vendors.

Why book a tour?

Sensoji is self-navigable, but a short guided walk explains three things most visitors miss: the Kannon miracle origin story, the omikuji drawing procedure (bad fortunes are tied to the designated rack, not kept), and the Japanese tea-ceremony offering at the main hall. For first-time Japan trips this is worth the ¥4,000-6,000.

Sensoji at night (and why to try it)

After 20:00 the Kaminarimon, five-storied pagoda, and the main hall are lit by uplights. Tour groups are gone. Mysticism returns. The grounds stay accessible even though the hall is closed. Night photography at the pagoda is one of TokyoPR's best underrated shots — framed by Tokyo Skytree in the distance.
