Magome and Tsumago are the two best-preserved Edo-era post towns in Japan - and the 8-km walking trail between them is Japan's most popular 'historic trail' day hike. Luggage shuttles, bear bells, and a stone-paved path exactly as samurai pilgrims saw it in 1700.

History + what makes Magome-Tsumago special

The Nakasendo was one of Japan's five Edo-era shogunal highways, running 534 km from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto via the inland Kiso Valley - the alternative to the coastal Tokaido. Of the 69 original post stations, Magome (station #43) and Tsumago (station #42) survived best after rail-line routing bypassed them in 1909. Tsumago in particular became Japan's first 'conservation district' in 1976 when residents voted to ban visible power lines and modern architecture. Magome, straddling Gifu Prefecture, offers a stone-paved slope up through traditional minshuku lodges + waterfall views. The 8.4-km trail between them follows the original Edo path through forest, past Odaki + Medaki waterfalls, bear-warning bells (ring them loudly), and the Tateba Chaya rest hut where free hot tea is still served to walkers 24/7.

  • ●Tsumago (preserved since 1976) - Japan's first conservation district; power lines buried; no modern storefronts.
  • ●Magome (Gifu side) - Stone-paved sloped main street; museum of Shimazaki Toson (local-born novelist).
  • ●8.4 km trail - Original Edo stone-paved sections; bear bells every 500 m.
  • ●Tateba Chaya tea house - Free hot tea on the trail; donations accepted.
  • ●Luggage shuttle service - ¥1,000-1,500 per bag; book via Magome/Tsumago tourism offices.
