Yabusame Horseback Archery 2027: Complete Guide to Japan's Samurai Festivals
2026-10-25 · 10分で読める

Yabusame is the 800-year-old samurai art of firing arrows from a galloping horse — practised live at Kamakura, Nikko, Meiji Jingu and 20 other shrines across 2027. Here's where and when to see it.
Yabusame (流鏑馬) is the samurai art of horseback archery — a mounted warrior gallops down a 240-metre track at full speed and fires three arrows at three wooden targets, aiming perfectly between the shoulder blades. The practice dates to the 12th century, developed by the Minamoto samurai to prepare mounted warriors for battle. Today it survives as a Shinto ritual at a dozen shrines across Japan, each performance a direct line to the Kamakura shogunate's military heritage. Hitting all three targets is a sign of divine blessing for the shrine, the harvest, and Japan itself.
💡Last content review: October 2026
Yabusame dates compiled from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (Kamakura), Toshogu Shrine (Nikko), Meiji Jingu (Tokyo), Samukawa Jinja, Yasukuni Jinja and the Japan Yabusame Society annual calendar. Dates vary by shrine but most anchor to fixed days.

How yabusame actually works
The yabusame track is a long, narrow strip of sand or soil — usually 240m. Three wooden targets, each 50cm square and painted with concentric circles, are placed at 100m, 170m, and 220m from the start. The mounted archer gallops at full speed (~25 km/h) and fires three arrows in sequence. The arrow is a kabura-ya — a 'turnip-head' arrow that doesn't pierce the target but makes a loud whistling noise. Direct hits are rare — ~30% of all shots hit the target; a 'perfect run' of three hits is seen once every 2-3 festivals.
