Aoba Castle (Sendai-jo) was the hilltop fortress of Date Masamune — the one-eyed warlord who founded Sendai in 1601 — perched 115 metres above the Hirose River on Mt Hoonji. The main keep is long gone, but the stone walls, bronze equestrian statue of Masamune, and the Honmaru viewing terrace survive, offering the panoramic view that convinced Date to build here.
