Why Shodoshima

Shodoshima has a storybook mix of landscapes you don't expect in Japan: olive groves and lemon trees that could pass for a Greek island, a cable-car gorge that rivals autumn Kyoto, a working soy-sauce quarter where you can still smell the barrels, and a sandbar that materialises from the sea twice a day. It is less than three hours from Osaka or Okayama, but gets a fraction of their crowds.

• ●Which port is closest to Olive Park? Tonosho side (Toshima port). The Olive Bus Sakate Line stops right outside.
• ●When is Angel Road walkable? The sandbar emerges within about three hours either side of low tide; tide table is published monthly.
• ●Rental car or bus? Car wins for a one-day visit. Olive Bus works but runs roughly hourly and ends early.
