Why Naoshima is special
Naoshima was reinvented in the 1990s by the Benesse publishing group and architect Tadao Ando: a disused copper-refining island turned into a slow-paced sculpture garden with world-class contemporary art hidden inside half-buried concrete bunkers. Nothing here shouts. The Chichu Art Museum has five Monet Water Lilies in a daylight-only room, and James Turrell's Open Field asks you to walk into a glowing rectangle you thought was a wall.
