About this festival
Setsubun-e at Sensoji is held on Setsubun, the day before the start of spring (February 3 in 2027). Temple priests and selected toshi-otoko march from Denboin to the Main Hall and throw beans from a stage on its east side, followed by the Fukuju-no-mai, the Seven Lucky Gods dance. Because no demons are said to stand before Kannon, the call is 'Senshu banzai, fuku wa uchi' rather than 'oni wa soto'. Celebrities with ties to Asakusa also throw beans at an event organised by the Asakusa Tourism Federation.
