โœจ Fireflies โ€” May to July

Firefly Viewing in Japan

Japan's magical hotaru season โ€” late May to mid-July

About Hotaru Viewing

Japan has two iconic firefly species: Genji-botaru (larger, found by clean mountain streams) and Heike-botaru (smaller, in rice paddies). Both light up rural Japan from late May to mid-July, with peak in early-to-mid June. Many spots are designated National Natural Monuments. Viewing is silent, magical, and uniquely Japanese.

โœจ Firefly Viewing Tips

  • โœ“Arrive 30 min before sunset to find a spot and let your eyes adjust to darkness
  • โœ“Wear dark clothing โ€” fireflies are attracted to dim natural conditions
  • โœ“Bring mosquito repellent โ€” fireflies love the same humid environments mosquitoes do
  • โœ—Do not use flash photography โ€” it harms the fireflies and ruins the view for others
  • โœ—Do not catch or touch fireflies โ€” many sites are protected nature reserves
