The three-island high-speed route runs daily March-November except Tuesdays, and only on Mon/Fri/Sat/Sun/holidays December-February. If both museums are shut that day, the boat doesn't sail. Check Shikoku Kisen before you leave.

Why these two
Naoshima is the headline, but Teshima's Ryue Nishizawa / Rei Naito collaboration is the single most meditative building in Japan: no exhibits, just an elliptical concrete dome with two oval openings to the sky, and a floor engineered so hundreds of water droplets slowly travel across it. Inujima turned a 1909 copper refinery's ruins into a museum that uses only the sun, wind and the building's own thermal mass. Both are hard enough to reach that crowds thin out even in peak season.
