Nikko Toshogu Shrine 2027: Tochigi UNESCO Day Trip Guide

Nikko is where Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate, chose to be deified. The shrine complex

From Tobu Nikko Station, bus 10 min to Shinkyo (the famous red sacred bridge over the Daiya River). From there walk uphill to the shrine complex. Rinnoji's Sanbutsudo (three giant Buddhas hall) is the first stop; next is Toshogu, dominated by the Yomei-mon gate. Pass through to the famous 'See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' three monkeys panel (nemuri-neko = sleeping cat panel is also here, over a side gate), climb 207 stone steps to Tokugawa Ieyasu's mausoleum at the top. From Toshogu walk 10 minutes to Futarasan Shrine (older than Toshogu, 790 AD). Allow 3 hours for the complete loop. English audio guides available for ¥500.

Mid-October koyo window is peak — the Iroha-zaka route is famous for the maple colors from the switchbacks.

Buses from Tobu Nikko Station loop the shrine area (¥600 round-trip) and continue to Lake Chuzenji (¥1,350 one-way, 50 minutes).
