Nara Deer Park 2027: Todaiji, Kasuga Taisha & Deer Guide
2026-10-25 · 10 min read

Nara's deer park holds 1,200 free-roaming sika deer, officially designated National Treasures, plus the Daibutsu — the world's largest bronze Buddha in the world's largest wooden building. Here is the full-day plan from Kyoto or Osaka, including the deer bowing ritual.
Nara Park's 1,200 sika deer are officially designated National Treasures — descendants of the sacred messengers of Takemikazuchi, the god enshrined at Kasuga Taisha. They bow for crackers (shika senbei) sold by vendors for ¥200. They also eat maps, bus tickets, and the hem of your jacket if you're careless.
💡Last content review: October 2026
Todaiji admission (¥800 adult), Nara Park free access, and 2027 UNESCO status verified via Todaiji official site and Nara Prefecture tourism bureau.
⚡⏰ Peak-season rooms go first
Golden Week, Obon, New Year and the sakura and autumn-leaf peaks fill up fast. Once your dates are set, check availability now. Every week you wait, there are fewer rooms to choose from.

The classic Nara day plan
From Kintetsu Nara or JR Nara, walk 10 minutes east into Nara Park. Deer appear immediately — they are everywhere. First major stop is Kofukuji (5-story pagoda, oldest pagoda in Japan after Horyuji; some buildings under 2027 renovation). From there, walk north through Nara National Museum (optional) to Todaiji Nandaimon — the massive wooden south gate with the 8-meter Kongorikishi guardian statues. Inside is the Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall) with the 15-meter bronze Vairocana Buddha. Allow 60 minutes for Todaiji. From Todaiji, walk south through forest to Kasuga Taisha, the lantern shrine, where 3,000 stone lanterns line the approach and 1,000 bronze lanterns hang inside. Finish at Nigatsu-do's hillside viewing platform for the sunset view over Nara.

- ●Kofukuji — 5-story pagoda; some structures under 2027 renovation.
- ●Todaiji Daibutsu-den — 15m bronze Buddha, world's largest bronze Buddha; world's largest wooden structure.
- ●Kasuga Taisha — 3,000 lanterns; February/August illumination festivals.
- ●Nigatsu-do — hillside hall with the best Nara city view; home of the Omizutori March fire festival.
- ●Isuien Garden — hidden Edo-era stroll garden; borrowed scenery view of Todaiji.
Deer etiquette (important)
- ●Only feed shika senbei from registered vendors — human food (chocolate, bread) is dangerous.
- ●Hide crackers before showing them — once visible, 10 deer swarm.
- ●Bow to deer and they often bow back — the famous ritual works best with eye contact.
- ●Don't tease — deer have been known to charge, especially males during October rutting season.
- ●Keep maps and [tickets](https://www.klook.com/en-US/search/?query=Japan&tp_sub=japan) zipped away — paper is a known deer snack.
