Mito Kairakuen Garden 2027: Japan's Three Great Gardens with 3,000 Plum Trees

Kairakuen means 'garden to enjoy with people' — opened to commoners in 1842 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the ninth lord of Mito. Across 13 hectares grow 3,000 plum trees in 100 varieties; from mid-February they bloom white, pink and red while Japan is still frozen elsewhere. The 131st Mito Plum Festival runs February 11 to March 21, 2027.
