Kurobe Tateyama Alpine Route 2027: Snow Wall Walk Guide
💡TL;DR⏱ 3 min read

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the Japan Alps on a 37 km chain of cable cars, ropeways, buses and trolleybuses — including the famous 20-meter snow walls (Yuki no Otani) at Murodo. Here is the 2027 crossing plan, snow wall dates, and how to book the one-way through-ticket.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is Japan's most spectacular public-transport journey — 37 km across the Japan Alps on a chain of cable cars, ropeways, buses and the world's only electric trolleybuses. The snow walls at Murodo rise 15–20 meters in April and May. The crossing from Toyama to Nagano (or reverse) takes 7–8 hours end-to-end.

💡Last content review: October 2026

2027 route open dates (expected April 15 – November 30 following annual pattern) and Yuki no Otani snow wall walk (expected April 15 – June 25) based on official 2026 schedule.

⚡⏰ Peak-season rooms go first

Golden Week, Obon, New Year and the sakura and autumn-leaf peaks fill up fast. Once your dates are set, check availability now. Every week you wait, there are fewer rooms to choose from.

The seven transport legs

The Alpine Route is one continuous ticket but seven separate vehicles. Starting from Toyama (west) side: Dentetsu Toyama Line local train to Tateyama Station; Tateyama Cable Car to Bijodaira; Highland Bus to Murodo (snow wall site); Trolleybus to Daikanbo; Tateyama Ropeway down to Kurobedaira; Kurobe Cable Car to Kurobeko (Kurobe Dam viewpoint); walk across Kurobe Dam; Kanden Trolley Bus through tunnel to Ogizawa (Nagano side); bus connection to JR Shinano-Omachi Station. Through-tickets include all seven legs.

  • ●Dentetsu Toyama → Tateyama (1h) — local train through Toyama's rural plain.
  • ●Tateyama Cable Car → Bijodaira (7min) — 7-min steep cable car; 500m elevation gain.
  • ●Highland Bus → Murodo (50min) — the big elevation push; snow wall observation en route.
  • ●Trolleybus → Daikanbo (10min) — electric-only tunnel through Mt. Tateyama.
  • ●Ropeway → Kurobedaira (7min) — the longest no-support ropeway in Japan.
  • ●Kurobe Cable Car → Kurobeko (5min) — tunnel cable car down to the dam.
  • ●Kanden Trolley Bus → Ogizawa (16min) — crosses to Nagano side under the mountain.

Snow wall timing

  • ●Opening — April 15, 2027 (expected); walls at maximum height.
  • ●Peak wall heights (15–20 m) — late April to mid-May.
  • ●Snow wall walk closes — June 25, 2027 (expected); walls melt rapidly in late June.
  • ●Summer alpine season — July–August; wildflowers; much lighter crowds.
  • ●Autumn koyo — late September to late October; stunning but ropeway queues.
  • ●Season close — November 30; mountain shuts December through mid-April.

Direction and bag strategy

Through-crossings end up on the opposite side from where you started. If you don't want to backtrack, book luggage forwarding (Kuroneko Yamato) from your Toyama hotel to your Shinano-Omachi hotel the day before (¥2,000–¥3,000 per bag). Direction tip: east-to-west (Shinano-Omachi → Toyama) gives slightly better light at Murodo for photos, but west-to-east is marginally cheaper and more common. Reservations for peak dates (first 2 weeks of May) are mandatory for the trolleybus and highland bus — book via the Alpine Route official site 3+ weeks ahead.
