Kurama Kibune 2027: Kyoto Mountain Day Trip + Onsen Guide
2026-10-25 ยท 9 min read

Kurama and Kibune are two mountain villages 30 minutes north of Kyoto by Eizan train, connected by a 1-hour forest hike over Mt. Kurama. Here is the full-day plan: Kibune Shrine, cross-mountain hike, Kurama Temple, and the Kurama Onsen outdoor bath.
Kurama and Kibune sit on either side of Mt. Kurama in the forested mountains 30 minutes north of Kyoto. The classic plan: Eizan train to Kibune-guchi, Kibune Shrine (water deity, kawadoko riverside dining in summer), 1-hour forested hike over the ridge, down to Kurama Temple, and finish with a sulphur open-air bath at Kurama Onsen.

The hike itself
Direction matters. Starting at Kibune and crossing to Kurama is the recommended direction โ downhill-biased on the far side, finishing at the onsen. From Kibune-guchi station take the local bus (or walk 25 minutes uphill) to Kibune Shrine, dedicated to the water deity Takaokami-no-Kami. The shrine is small but beautifully illuminated after dark; its paper fortunes are placed on sacred water to reveal the result. From Kibune, climb through the Nishimon west gate of Kurama Temple grounds, past 6th-century Oku-no-in Mao-den (the hidden inner temple), then down the eastern slope past Yuki Shrine to Kurama Temple's main hall. The hike takes 60โ90 minutes.
- โKibune Shrine โ water deity; paper fortunes placed on sacred spring to appear.
- โOku-no-in Mao-den โ the hidden Nishimon-gate inner sanctuary of Kurama Temple.
- โKurama Temple main hall โ pentagram floor pattern marking spiritual energy point.
- โYuki Shrine โ passed on the hike down; famous fire festival in October.
- โKurama Onsen โ sulphur open-air bath; from the station platform, 10-min walk uphill.
Seasons
- โSpring โ sakura mid-April (later than central Kyoto due to elevation).
- โSummer (MayโSep) โ Kibune's kawadoko dining platforms over the Kibune River.
- โAutumn โ koyo peak late November; Eizan line has a special koyo illumination tunnel between Ichihara and Ninose stations.
- โWinter โ snow possible; the hike closes if there's heavy snow; onsen still open.
