Kiyomizudera 2027: Kyoto Wooden Stage Temple Visitor Guide
2026-10-25 · 9 min read

Kiyomizudera's wooden stage juts out 13 meters over the Higashiyama hillside and the view from it is one of Kyoto's defining shots. Here is how to plan a visit around night illuminations, the Otowa Waterfall three-stream wish, and the Higashiyama hillside walk.
Kiyomizu-dera — the Temple of Pure Water — hangs its 13-meter wooden stage out over the Higashiyama hillside with 139 pillars and not a single nail. The Edo-era idiom 'jumping from Kiyomizu's stage' meant going all-in on a bold decision; 234 people actually did jump between 1694 and 1864. Today you stay on the stage, drink from the Otowa Waterfall, and come back at night for the illumination.

The visit itself
The approach from the Gojo-zaka bus stop is uphill through Chawan-zaka (Teapot Lane) — pottery shops, matcha stands, pickle vendors — about 10 minutes to the Niomon main gate. The vermillion three-story pagoda, the wooden stage, Okuno-in sub-shrine (with the second famous photo angle of the main stage), and the Otowa Waterfall are the main stops. At the waterfall, three channels fall into a pool — longevity, success in studies, and love. Drinking from all three is considered greedy; pick one. The hidden-gem Jishu Shrine behind the main hall is dedicated to the god of love-making and has the famous 'love stones' — walk between them eyes closed to find love.
- ●Main Hall + Stage — 13m wooden platform; no nails; 139 pillars.
- ●Otowa Waterfall — three streams: longevity, studies, love. Pick one.
- ●Jishu Shrine — love-stones; closed Jan 1 for renovation then open rest of 2027.
- ●Okuno-in — second view of the main stage; best photo spot.
- ●Koyasu Pagoda — three-story vermillion pagoda deeper in the grounds; safe-childbirth prayers.

Chaining Higashiyama
Kiyomizu is the south end of the Higashiyama walking route. The classic chain: Kiyomizu-dera → down Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes (preserved Edo street) → Yasaka Pagoda → Kodai-ji → Yasaka Shrine → Gion. The full walk takes 3–4 hours with stops. Rickshaws are available for the Sannen-zaka to Yasaka stretch.
