Japan White Day 2027: Complete Guide to the March 14 Return Gift
2026-10-25 ยท 7 min read
On March 14, 2027 (Sunday) Japanese men return the Valentine's chocolate โ at 2-3ร the value. Here's the history, the sanbai-gaeshi rule, and the best Tokyo and Osaka White Day fairs.
White Day (ใใฏใคใใใผ) was invented in 1978 by candy maker Fujiya and the National Confectionery Industry Association as the counter-holiday to Valentine's Day โ a chance for men to return the chocolate gesture a month later. The sanbai-gaeshi (ไธๅ่ฟใ) rule, 'triple return', emerged in the 1990s as marketing shorthand: a ยฅ1,500 giri-choco gets a ยฅ3,000-ยฅ5,000 return. White Day sweets are white chocolate, cookies, macarons and marshmallows โ anything with a 'white' colour palette.

The modern White Day shift
The pandemic broke the forced office gift-giving ritual. 2024 and 2025 Mitsukoshi White Day surveys show only 32% of workplaces still exchange giri-choco and the mandatory return. However, honmei White Day โ the partner-to-partner return โ has grown: luxury Japanese jewelers report that single-item sales of pendants, pearl earrings, and small handbags spike 25-40% in the first week of March. Many men now skip the chocolate entirely and give a ยฅ20,000-ยฅ50,000 branded item that lasts beyond March 14 itself.

- โWhat should the return gift look like? White/pastel colored, nicely boxed. White chocolate, macarons, cookies, marshmallows are all traditional.
- โIs sanbai-gaeshi (triple return) mandatory? No โ it's informal convention. For giri-choco, 2-3ร is standard; for honmei, the quality matters more than the ratio.
- โCan I give something non-sweet? Yes โ small jewelry, cosmetics, scarves and handbags are all acceptable, especially for honmei.
- โWhat if I didn't receive Valentine's chocolate? Then no return is expected. White Day is strictly reciprocal.
- โDoes the office still exchange gifts? Declining โ 2024 survey showed only 32% of workplaces still do. Many ban it.
- โIs Mar 14 a holiday? No โ regular working day (Sunday in 2027). Department stores open normal hours.
- โWhere should I pre-order? Isetan Shinjuku, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi, Takashimaya Shinjuku โ pre-order Feb 20-25 for Mar 10-14 pickup.
- โAre macarons the top gift? Yes in 2024-2025 โ Pierre Herme and Dalloyau boxes have outsold white chocolate for 3 years running.
- โDo couples celebrate at a restaurant too? Yes โ many book a dinner date on Mar 14 Sunday. Palace Hotel, Narisawa, Esquisse fill fast.
- โWhat's the global version? Taiwan, South Korea and China also observe White Day on Mar 14, though the sanbai-gaeshi convention is Japan-only.
