Japan in April 2027: Complete Month Guide — Peak Sakura + Spring Festivals
💡TL;DR⏱ 3 min read

April is Japan's biggest tourism month. Sakura peaks in Kyoto first week, Tohoku end of month, and the sakura chase is a seven-prefecture pilgrimage. Here's how to actually plan it.

April in Japan is sakura, and sakura in April is a seven-prefecture gradient. Kyoto's cherry blossoms peak in the first week; Tokyo's hangers-on last till 7-8 April; by mid-April the front has moved to Fukushima and Nagano; and the final cherry city — Hirosaki in Aomori — peaks around 25 April. If you have ten days you can chase the front from south to north and never see a brown branch.

💡Last content review: October 2026

Sakura peak dates are 10-year JMA averages. Takayama Spring Festival (Sanno Matsuri) is 14-15 April fixed. Golden Week starts 29 April (Showa Day).

⚡⏰ Peak-season rooms go first

Golden Week, Obon, New Year and the sakura and autumn-leaf peaks fill up fast. Once your dates are set, check availability now. Every week you wait, there are fewer rooms to choose from.

FAQ

  • ●What if sakura has fallen in [Tokyo](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Tokyo&aid=8095781&label=auto-tokyo-autolink&nflt=review_score%3D80&order=popularity) when I arrive? Chase north — Tohoku + Hokkaido peak 15-30 April; you can still catch sakura.
  • ●Yoshino vs Hirosaki — which is better? Yoshino is bigger (30,000 trees across mountain levels); Hirosaki is more photogenic (castle + moat).
  • ●[Takayama](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Takayama&aid=8095781&label=auto-takayama-autolink&nflt=review_score%3D80&order=popularity) Festival — hotels booked, options? Stay in Toyama or Gifu city, day-trip in on the Hida Wide-View from Takayama Station.
  • ●Is [JR Pass](https://www.klook.com/en-US/activity/6415-japan-rail-pass-jr-pass-japan/) worth it in April? Only if doing shinkansen 3+ long legs; for sakura chase (Kyoto-Tohoku) absolutely yes.
  • ●How many days needed for proper sakura chase? Minimum 10, ideal 14 — allows two sakura cities + Takayama + Tohoku.
  • ●Nikko sakura? Peaks 20-30 April — pairs with Tokyo late-April trip.
  • ●Hanami picnic rules? Blanket OK, no reservations beyond daybreak, alcohol fine in parks (not inside Imperial grounds).
  • ●Rain-day sakura alternative? Covered boat (Chidorigafuchi, Hirosaki), covered walkway (Daigo-ji), illuminated indoor cherry at Nabana no Sato.
  • ●When does Golden Week start? 29 April (Showa Day) 2027 — hotels and shinkansen spike sharply from 28 April.
  • ●Private driver vs shinkansen for sakura chase? Shinkansen faster + cheaper for long legs; private driver only sensible for Tohoku town-to-town short hops.
