Dogo Onsen (Japan's oldest hot spring, 3,000 years), Botchan clock, and Masaoka Shiki â the Shikoku city foreign guides overlook. Photos, routes, and primary sources for planning a visit.
Matsuyama is where Japan's oldest hot spring meets its most famous novel. Dogo Onsen (3,000 years of continuous use) is the setting of Natsume Soseki's *Botchan* (1906), Japan's most-taught novel. Ninety minutes from Osaka by plane; less than most Tokyoites will travel for a weekend.

Dogo Onsen â the 3,000-year-old bath
Dogo Onsen is mentioned in the *Nihon Shoki* (720 AD), making it the oldest recorded hot spring in Japan. The main building (Dogo Onsen Honkan) is a 1894 wooden bathhouse designated Important Cultural Property â but has been in partial restoration since 2019. The fully-open alternative next door is Tsubaki-no-Yu, using the exact same source water.

- âTsubaki-no-Yu (æ€żăźæčŻ) â the modern public bath next to Dogo Onsen Honkan, drawing the same source water. Alkaline simple hot spring. See the official site linked below for the current admission price and hours.
- âLocation: about 100m from Dogo Onsen Honkan, ~4-min walk from Dogo Onsen Station (Iyotetsu tram). Cross the small square with the karakuri clock.
- âTowel rental is available at the entrance; shampoo and soap are provided in the bath.
- âTattoo policy: check the operator's current notice before visiting â public bath rules in Japan vary and change.
âĄHonkan restoration status
Dogo Onsen Honkan (the 1894 building shown on most guides) has been undergoing partial restoration since 2019. Parts of the exterior are typically under scaffolding and some floors have been closed at various stages of the works. The Kami-no-Yu bath has generally remained open during the restoration, but check the official Dogo Onsen site linked below for the current status and price before you go. Tsubaki-no-Yu next door is a modern building with the same source water and is not affected by the restoration.

- âBotchan Karakuri Clock (ćăŁăĄăăă«ă©ăŻăȘæèš) â mechanical clock built for Dogo Onsen's 100th anniversary. Character figures pop out every hour 8:00â22:00 (every 30 min in peak season).
- âFree ashiyu (foot bath) at the base of the clock â sit on the stone benches and dip your feet. Bring a small towel.
- âLocation: Directly outside Dogo Onsen Station (Iyotetsu tram terminus).

Masaoka Shiki was born in Matsuyama in 1867 and is one of the founders of the modern *haiku* form. He is also the origin of much of the Japanese baseball vocabulary still in use today, having coined éç (yakyu, baseball), æè (dasha, batter), and è”°è (sosha, runner). The statue depicts him in baseball uniform because he was a passionate amateur player before tuberculosis ended his life at 34.
- âShiki Memorial Museum (ćèŠèšćż”ćç©é€š) â near Dogo Onsen. See the official site linked below for current admission and closed days.
- âStatue location: near the Iyotetsu Dogo Onsen Station square.
- âReading suggestion: *Botchan* (Natsume Soseki, 1906) is set in Matsuyama. English translations are widely available; Soseki taught here briefly before writing the novel.
