Tokushima Indigo (Awa Ai) Dyeing 2027: Workshops + History Guide
2026-10-25 · 9 Min. Lesezeit

Tokushima's Awa indigo (aizome) dye is the deep blue that colored samurai war surcoats and Japan's working-class kimono for 400 years - today it's revived by 15 young craftsmen.
Awa indigo was Japan's deepest blue - a Tokushima dye so prized the shogunate taxed every household that grew the leaves. The dye nearly died with the Taisho era; today 15 young craftsmen have revived the craft, and you can book a 90-min hands-on indigo workshop in central Tokushima for „4,000.

History + what makes Awa indigo special
Awa (now Tokushima) grew Japan's deepest-blue indigo leaves because of the Yoshino River's annual floods, which replenished mineral-rich soil ideal for Polygonum tinctorium plants. By 1700, Awa indigo controlled 80% of Japan's blue-dye market and taxed over 30,000 households. The dye was prized for samurai war surcoats (jin-baori), working-class kimono (kasuri), and merchant class noren curtains. The industry crashed after 1900 when synthetic indigo from Germany flooded Japanese markets. By 1980, Awa indigo was down to 3 licensed houses. The 2010s revival by Kenta Watanabe (Buaisou co-founder, Brooklyn-trained designer) brought the craft to global fashion scenes - Buaisou's indigo-dyed denim and interior textiles now sell at Beams and MoMA Design Store.
