Battleship Mikasa (1902), Admiral Togo statue, US Navy base views, and yokosuka navy curry — a genuinely underrated day trip 60 minutes from Tokyo. Field notes from a Feb 2025 visit.
Yokosuka gets skipped by almost every foreign guide because it isn't Kamakura. That's the point — you get a preserved 1902 battleship, sweeping bay views, and navy curry at 60% of the tourist density. 60 minutes from Shinagawa.

🎯Take Keikyu, not JR
Almost every English guide says 'JR Yokosuka Line' by default. Keikyu Line to Yokosuka-Chuo is faster and drops you 12 minutes from Mikasa Park on foot. From JR Yokosuka Station it's 20 minutes.
Field notes from Ren (Feb 2025 visit)
- ●Mikasa Park is a 12-min walk from Yokosuka-Chuo Station (Keikyu). Exit the station east, cross the pedestrian bridge to Coasca Bayside, then follow the waterfront path south. Free, well-signed in English.
- ●Ship entry ¥600 adults (2025), open 9:00–17:30 Apr–Oct / 9:00–17:00 Nov–Mar. Closed Dec 28–31. Audio guide in English/Chinese/Korean rentable for ¥200 at the entrance ramp.
- ●Time budget: 60–90 min for the ship + park. Add 45 min if you visit the Yokosuka Naval Port cruise (see below).
- ●Weather note (Feb 2025): I was there 3:30 PM on a clear winter afternoon, 8°C — the low sun lit the starboard hull beautifully. Cloudy days the grey ship blends into grey sky; try to pick a sunny day.
- ●Admiral Togo statue is at the park entrance, on the west side. The stone monument next to it is a replica of the 'Z-flag signal' Togo raised at the Battle of Tsushima (1905): *'The fate of the Empire rests on this one battle.'*
- ●Kids' playground next to the ship — good for families combining with the visit.
- ●Food in the park: none. Walk 8 min west to central Yokosuka (Coasca Bayside mall) for navy curry.
What to see beyond the ship
- ●Yokosuka Naval Port Cruise — 45-min boat tourPR past US Navy + JMSDF warships (rare civilian view of active naval base). ¥1,600 adults. Departs Verny Park, near JR Yokosuka Station. Weekend + Wed only in winter, daily Apr–Oct.
- ●Verny Park — French-designed rose garden along the waterfront. Free, roses peak mid-May and mid-Oct.
- ●Dobuita Street — 1km strip of navy-themed bars, tailors (custom sukajan jackets ¥30,000+), and burger joints. Walk from JR Yokosuka Station.
- ●Yokosuka Navy Curry — the city's signature dish. Try TSUNAMI, Wood Island, or the curry hall in Coasca Bayside. Roughly ¥1,200–1,800.
