2026-10-22 · 8分钟阅读

A 720-year-old Soto Zen temple in Iwate with the world's largest thatched roof — 720 tsubo, 35m span.
Oshu's Shoboji is Japan's third major Soto Zen head temple (after Eiheiji in Fukui and Sojiji in Yokohama) and has the world's largest thatched temple roof — 720 tsubo (~2,380 m²), 35m wingspan. Built in 1348, rebuilt in 1811, it's maintained by rotating thatchers who re-cover sections every ~20 years.

Why Shoboji matters
Thatched roofs ('kayabuki') were once universal in Japan, but industrialization reduced them to a few hundred historical buildings. Shoboji's roof requires 23,000 bundles of susuki pampas grass, is 1m thick, and lasts 20-25 years before needing partial re-thatching. The temple maintains an in-house team of certified craftsmen — one of the last traditional thatching schools in Japan. Weight on the roof structure: 150 tons. The scale is hard to grasp from photos — in person, it dominates the compound.
What to see on the grounds
- ●Honden (main hall) — the 720-tsubo thatched roof. Walk the covered veranda to see the underside of the thatch.
- ●Zazen hall — public meditation sessions some weekends (reservation required, Japanese-only guidance).
- ●Garden — small rock garden in dry landscape (karesansui) style
- ●Treasury — rotating exhibits of temple artifacts, calligraphy, dharma lineage charts
- ●Nearby Hiraizumi UNESCO sites — Chusonji (Golden Hall) + Motsuji Garden are 30 min drive, UNESCO World Heritage
How to get there
From TokyoPR: Shinkansen Hayabusa to Mizusawa-Esashi (2h30min). From Mizusawa-Esashi: Local train 1 stop to JR Mizusawa Station, then taxi 25 min (¥3,500). Alternative: Rent a car at Mizusawa-Esashi (¥7,000/day) — temple + Hiraizumi + Chusonji in one day. No direct bus from Mizusawa to Shoboji.
Where to stay
Hiraizumi town has small ryokans ¥15,000-25,000, 30 min drive from Shoboji. Mizusawa and Kitakami have business hotels ¥7,000-11,000. For a 2-day Iwate Zen trip: Shoboji + Hiraizumi (Chusonji + Motsuji) + Takkoku-no-Iwaya cliff temple makes a complete loop with 1 overnight.

FAQ
