Omagari All-Japan Fireworks Competition (大曲全国花火競技大会) is the Wimbledon of Japanese fireworks. Not a display — a COMPETITION. 27 of Japan's top pyrotechnicians compete for the Prime Minister's Award. Held annually in Omagari, Akita on the last Saturday of August. 2026 date: Saturday August 30. Sajiki (reserved bench seats) are the only real way to watch — free viewing is 3 km away.

⚠️Sajiki bench 6-person seats mostly sold out — 7 weeks left

The official lottery closed May 15, 2026 and results were announced June 10. 80% of sajiki seats are sold. Remaining: some 6-person benches at ¥28,000-38,000 total, and individual chair seats at ¥7,500. Cancellation drops happen weekly. This is your last real chance.

🎯The photographer trick

The photographer camera zone application closed June 1, but photographers who registered and can't attend sometimes resell via Photrip Japan and PhotoSpotJapan forums. Bench sajiki also occasionally appears through these communities. Not for the mainstream — but for serious photography enthusiasts, the ¥10,000 camera zone is unmatched.

Free viewing reality

Omagari is not Sumida or Nagaoka — the free viewing zones are FAR. The 3 km distance means fireworks are still visible but small in the sky. Serious viewers don't do free at Omagari; they either commit to sajiki or skip the year.

  • Daisen-Nishi Elementary School vicinity — 2.5 km, free but distant, arrive by 3 PM
  • Kariwano Junction — 3 km, spread out, families, arrive by 4 PM
  • Ohtake Bridge north — furthest but no crowd, arrive by 5 PM
  • None of these give the actual Omagari experiencePR. Sajiki is essential.

Understanding the competition format

Unlike other fireworks festivals which are DISPLAYS (long continuous show), Omagari is a COMPETITION. Each competitor gets exactly one 90-second slot to launch their entry. Judges score on: color, form, timing, difficulty, cultural theme. Result announced at end. This creates a completely different rhythm than other festivals — pauses between entries, jury commentary, betting-style tension.

  • 3 categories: shell size (10-shells / 5-shells), daytime, new works
  • Winners announced 21:30 — Prime Minister's Award + Culture Ministry Award + several other categories
  • Best-view sajiki angles: FRONT-center for judging perspective, SIDE for photography
  • Attendee etiquette: applaud after each entry (locals DO), quiet during pyrotechnician's setup
  • Souvenirs: winner's shell design gets sold as postcard/photo book 2 weeks post-event

What to bring

  • Weather: Late August in Akita = 20-25°C evening, bring light jacket
  • Rain jacket: Rain often, event proceeds anyway unless severe
  • Small chair/mat: For sajiki, benches are wood — a cushion helps
  • Binoculars: Camera zone is optimal, but from sajiki some entries are distant
  • Portable radio: Local FM broadcasts judge commentary in Japanese
  • Cash ¥10,000+: Konbini card readers overwhelmed by network congestion

FAQ

  • Is Omagari really the best fireworks in Japan? For pyrotechnic quality — yes. For scale — Nagaoka is bigger. For atmosphere — depends on preference.
  • Should first-time visitors go? No — start with Sumida (accessible) or Nagaoka (dramatic). Omagari is for connoisseurs.
  • Can I visit without a sajiki? Yes, but you'll see 20% of the experiencePR. Not recommended.
  • Best photography angle? Front-center sajiki for main show; camera zone if you're serious (¥10,000 slot).
  • Judge commentary in English? No, only Japanese via FM radio. Some hotel lounges show subtitles.
  • Do winners get prize money? Yes — Prime Minister's Award: ¥1,000,000 + trophy + honor.
  • How competitive is it to become a competitor? 4-year waiting list. Only Japan's top 27 pyrotechnicians per year.
  • Rain policy? Severe rain postpones to Aug 31. Fine drizzle: proceeds. Never cancels outright.

Final decision framework

Omagari is a bucket-list event for people who deeply appreciate pyrotechnics. If you're serious: book a bench sajiki at the weekly Wednesday drop (10:00 JST refresh Lawson TicketPR page). Combine with Kakunodate hotel booking for a samurai-district weekend. If you're not sure: this isn't your first fireworks — go to Sumida or Nagaoka instead. Omagari rewards commitment, not curiosity.
